Fan in 9300 always on?

Does the fan in the 9300 spin while idle? If so, is it loud? Also, how loud does it get when gaming?

I'm used to my X1000 whose fan would not go on until you hit 100% CPU for about 10 seconds, but it would quickly turn off again after going back to idle speeds. What's the 9300 like?

BTW - I know it can be adjusted, but I would prefer not to mess with the factory settings if possible.

Thanks

Today I had an opportunity to test one of this babies ... As far a I can tell, that thing is quiet. Very quiet! About the fan going on and off and varyin its rpm/speed, I read somewhere on this forum some did have these kind of problems and some didn't. Those who had the problems, I thinke they fixed it w/ some new drivers. But don't take my word on this. I'm not 100% sure. I'll let the experts say the final word on this.

My fans seem to be on all of the time. I can't hear them they are very quiet. I don't mess with them. I just leave the fans on factory settings.

fans plural?

I thought the 9300 only had one and the XPS2 had 2...

your fans should always be on , they are running on low rpms, and on mine remarkably cool I might add, well done Dell!

Well my fan is almost never on (unless I'm gaming or doing something CPU-intensive). I'm just wondering if it will be a big distraction, but from the sound of it (no pun intended), it doesn't seem that it will be a problem.

LOL, the fans by default are always on and at lowest RPM when idle. Those of you that think your fans actually stop are either deaf or have external noise masking the fans or both!

I think you guys are all confused (or I am)...

Let me make this clear. I DO NOT HAVE AN I9300.

Ok, good. Now, my Compaq X1000's fan is off most of the time, but I wanted to know if the I9300's fan was on all the time, which it apparently is. Now I want to know if it's noticeable and / or annoying.

No. It is not. You will only hear it if you go CPU intensive for a while.

Yes, there are 2 fans on the 9300. One is for the CPU and the other is for the GPU. They are situated at the back of the notebook at each side.
I also upgraded from a Compaq X1000. I got the 9300 mainly because of the 6800go video card. That was the only limitation with the X1000. I had the 32mb 9200.

Thanks. That's good to know.

A couple more questions for an ex-X1000 owner, if you don't mind:
1) How long did you have the X1000 before you got the 9300?
2) Do you expect to keep the 9300 for long?
3) Any pros or cons compared to the X1000?
4) And I guess most importantly, are you happy that you upgraded?

I really like my X1000 except for the video card. The quality is great, it has nice little touches like the wireless button + light, the light above the mute button, touchpad on/off switch, it's powerful enough for most things (except anything more than casual gaming, and it's already getting pretty bad at the newest stuff), and the price was just amazing (I think I paid a little under $1000 total, including all the options in my sig). I was kinda bummed that I could not play BF2 on it (and I got the 64MB version too). I'm now seriously considering the 9300, but I want to make sure it's what I want (it seems like it is).

Thanks a lot.

Yes the fans on the 9300 are always running, they are very quiet and keep the system very cool, fans running equals cool laptop equals longer living laptop.

You have two fans if you have the nvidia - I believe the ati doesn't have a separate fan. In any case, I have the nvidia and my fans are always on low, unless I'm playing a game or such. In a room with just a little ambient noise, it's damn near impossible to hear unless you put your head up to the laptop. If the room is dead quiet, you will hear the fan, but it's very, very quiet (btw, that's at low speed - at high speed they are a bit noticeable)

Im sitting here imagining the obsessive compulsives with their ears planted on their laptop vents worrying that they might hear some fan noise...........
Fans are there for a reason folks, to cool your system and help it live longer.....
I fail to understand the obsession with this topic, fan noise even when the fans are loud on a system is just dull background noise, whether desktop or notebook, I have four fans blowing in my desktop and it never bothers me, its just background noise that fades away even when gaming, what I do notice is how cool my systems run and how long they last. Funny most of you fan obsessors out there cant even hear them running with your gaming speakers blaring at 120 decibels , the stereo running and talking on a headset LOL. In any case, you will find the 9300 to be very quiet and very efficient at cooling. Hats off To Dell and Intel. Too bad they havent replaced the prescotss with these pentium M's

1) I had my X1000 for about a year and a half. I had upgraded it from a 1.5 to a 1.7 dothan CPU.
2) I am not a hard core gamer. I plan to keep it at least three years. The strong GPU should last at least that long.
3) Pros: a better screen resolution, a better keyboard, a larger screen, much better sound.
Cons: Cost, I did not use any online coupons. I just got the weekly 20% discount.
4) Yes, I am happy I upgraded. Now I can play HL2. I also enjoy the better sound. I stream a lot of music.

I hope this and the PM I sent you will help.

Yes, but when you're in your living room with the family and have the lappy on your lap, the fans can be an issue (not in the 9300 I had an hp with the p4 in it, and the fans were almost as loud as the tv at some points....

Having your lappy in your lap isnt the best idea, your clothes and legs will block the fans, making the system warmer and yes the fans run harder and louder, I suggest getting a laptop pad in this scenario, it makes a big difference. On a side note, sitting in the living room with your family.......when is that ever a quiet setting? HEHEHE
