Take a look at this picture

Look at the "problem" ablum

I came home and my family's PC looked like that. I hooked up the monitor to my laptop, but everything looked fine. I am assuming that the video card or MB on the PC is dying. What do you guys think?

The PC is a 4-5 year old HP Pavilion. It runs really well.

Thanks for your help.

Actually, that picture doesnt show anything.... sorry about that. I will try to explain it.

On the screen, there seems to be areas that are shaded.
Ok, lets say that the screen is completey white, if there is a black square in the middle of the screen, there will be a shadow (shade) to the left and right of the box. The shade scretches from the far left to far right. This only happens horizontally. I wish you could see it in that stupid picture. Maybe you guys know what I am talking about.

it is the monitor, if your screenshot showed up fine and it displays on your laptop monitor, then the monitor is the weakest link.

no no.... when I hooked my laptop up to my monitor, everything looked fine. When it is connected to the PC, thats where the problems come in.

I will test the monitor with my laptop again, just to make sure.

Thanks guys!

Odd ... I had the same thing happen on a monitor a while back, and it turned out to be the monitor. It started with those smears (my smears were kinda a pinkish color), and wound up with color guns failing intermittently. Are you running the laptop at the same exact resolution and refresh rate when testing with it?

I just tested it again. They are both at 1200x800 at 60Hz. I wish I knew what the problem was. First I thought that there was some interference, like from a magnet or speaker, but I couldn't find anything. I am guessing that it's the video card on the PC.

60 Hz refresh rate? that's awful.. can't you bump it up to at least 75?? that would kill my eyes to look at. There's a lot of electronic things that can interfere with a display, like a printer for instance.. clear everything away, especially something new.

oh, because the laptop was at 60, but that's for an LCD which is standard. A desktop is bad on the eyes until at least 72 I think

Well I upped the refresh rate and the problem is still there... although it may seem the slightest bit better.
