HP DV series w/ an AMD processor?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I really like the DV series notebooks, however I am not too keen on Pentium/Celeron notebooks and I would rather have an AMD. With that said, are there currently any coming down the pipeline that I could purchase w/ an AMD processor whether it be Athlon 64 or Turion? Or am I stuck w/ Intel for some reason?

I guess the only thing that I am concerned about is the 64 bit apps coming around the corner, as I will be keeping the notebook for a few years. I know that the L2000 has an AMD processor, but aesthetically, I don't know if it is the same or not as the DV series. I really like the looks/build of the DV notebooks. I tried to get my hands on one over the weekend, but to no avail. Does anyone know about those two notebooks? I don't necessarily care for the big "LIVESTRONG" on the cover, and the Lance autograph on the notebook, as I don't really like the flashy looks, I would rather have something that looks sleek and stylish.

Also, is there any reason that HP has went w/ Intel rather than AMD for this series of notebooks? I have noticed that most of your bigger named computer companies don't offer AMD solutions... why not?

Thanks

Possibly sometime down the line of HP/Compaqs future they will introduce a DV-like system with an AMD CPU in it but I dont think it will be anytime soon. They have only just recently started to push the AMD based notebooks right now Also you shouldnt be TOO concerned over the 64bit issue. Most applications will still be backward compatable and 64bit apps wont be coming in large groups for years to come. I believe that by the time you would need a 64bit system you wont be using the laptop you have now anyway(even if it was 64bit capable).

i've seen the L and DV side by side at Sam's Club they are pretty similar but the chassis front pannel is different w/ the DV having more output plugs and a more slanted shape. The screen is the same and basic design is the same between the L and DV. I'd bet they come from the same ODM/ contract manufactuer. The only negative w/ the LS is that theres only 2 front jacks and the L seems to be somewhat gaudy. The L series is a nice buy though and i'd get the L over the DV which has the crappy intel GMA900 instead of the L's X200 integrated graphics. I liked the L2005 at www.samsclub.com to recommend it to various friends because its a nice set up for peanuts $1000 (1.8 Turion, dvd burner, bluetooth, broadcom wireless, 5400rpm 80 gig hd).

I have a abit AMD 64 desktop all tricked up, I also have a DV1135ap with an Intel Pentium M Centrino chipset.

I have always had AMD processors and this is my first Intel set up, to be honest there is nothing between them...... both run the same applications, however I do run some games on the desktop that are not on the DV1135 simply due to HD space (240gig verses 80gig) and the graphics card.

That aside both big and small machines could be badged the same (the desktop I assembled myself)

As to 64 bit, well as MS/AMD will tell you it was never designed for consumer applications more larger DB applications and number crunching, I have put XP 64 on the desktop and whilst marginally snappier it provides no real time benefit, great it supports 4 gig of memory! what do you want that for?

A mobile PC is just that, your not going to run the companies payroll or data base from it, it's to take in the field with you to communicate and be productive.

As a games machine they 'suck' those that can play the high end games get red hot and need hard power not batteries, if your going that way a comparable desktop will always be cheaper and better.

Exactly. There is no point in going 64bit right now unless your a hardcore gamer with a rocking video card or unless you run databases. And i that case you dont want a laptop because of the power it will use...
