microphone echo

Hi. I just bought an ASUS Z71V with XP Pro. It seems nice so far, but when there's sound near the microphone, it gets amplified and played through the speakers. I really don't want this. Turning the volume down for the microphone in the control panel didn't do anything. Muting the speakers works, but I don't want to mute everything--I just don't want the microphone input automatically routed to output. Anyone know how to fix this? (I assume it's not a Z71V-specific problem.)

Thanks

I'm assuming you're using something in Windows like Volume Control. Anyways, you can open up Volume Control (double click on the speaker icon at the bottom right of your laptop, if it's there), and make sure that for Options>Properties, "Playback" is selected, and that "Microphone" is an option. Then go to the Microphone section and check off the "Mute" box.

I think what you were doing before was lowering the RECORDING volume for the microphone. But what you need to do is turn down or mute the PLAYBACK volume of your microphone (i.e. tell Windows to stop PLAYBACK on the speakers of what the microphone is picking up).

Aha! You're right, I tried lowering the recording volume, and I also tried to record the playback volume, but there was no setting for the microphone. It never occurred to me that I'd have to set an option just to get the microphone volume to show up. Thanks!
