Alienware or Michaels computer

Does anyone know anything about Michaels Computers? I'm torn between the new MC MX51 which sports the new AMD 64 chip or the Area-51m. Other than the chips the specs are about the same. MC gives you a 5 year warranty and better software for about $200 less.

Something seems fishy there.... a 5 year warranty is unheard of with a laptop.

Plus, when you go to customize the Athlon Laptop, they claim you can order 7200 RPM Hard drives in sizes other than 60GB. Obviously this is a load if ya know what I mean. I would put a little more research in, because the prices are intriguing.

Michaels computers.

I was very fishy about the 80gb 7200rpm HD myself. I researched it and found that it was recently released, but the price is enormous. $400+

There is supposed to be a review of the MX51 in the next issue of Computer Gaming World. We'll see.

Just a quick look at their "MX5W" tells me all I need to know. It is obviously a clevo rebrand and would hence be identical to the Sager 4760 (which has been replaced by the 4780). If you were to price one comparably equipped to one from PCTorque, the prices would be:

PCT: ~$1600 (I know because I had been watching the prices of the 4760 before the 4780 came out)
MC: $3150 (XP Pro instead of Home, XP Home not offered as far as I can see)

So I can see how they could offer a 5 year warranty since the computer is roughly overpriced by a factor of 2.

I wouldn't spend that much money on a HDD, I'd get a 4200rpm harddrive and save 200 dollars. You can wait a few more seconds, can't you?

I'm very interested in the MX51, too. I've written and called Michael's Computer for more info, but no response so far. The "1600 FSB" is quite a claim. It's also a bit hard to believe. The website claims to be able to ship within 3-4 days of ordering. Voodoo and Hypersonic are backordered for 3-5 weeks on their Athlon 64 noterbooks.

I'm Starting To Question Michaels Computers. In Big Print It Mentions Having A 128mb Radeon Video Card. 11-17-03 Is The 1st Time It Tells You It Is A 64mb Radeon 9600 That Will Outperform Any 9800pro Out There. Bull!

I Believe They Printed That Just Because Both Hypersonic And Voodoo Have 64 Bit Laptops And Are Clearly Stating Their 64mb Video Cards.

Yeah, I kinda expected that correction. Not to boast, but I wouldn't be surprised if my early morning calls and e-mails got them to make the change. You should've seen the C-Y-A fireworks I started when I began posting messages on Alienware's forums once I opened my new 51m only to find that it wasn't a fully metallic case at all. Their director of mobility products actually called me about the issue. I don't believe AW was intentionally fraudulent with their advertising, but they definitely were very careless, sloppy, and maybe even a little misleading and hoping no one would notice.

I'm much more interested in the MX51's 1600 FSB capability. Is that possible?

I seriously doubt the mx51's ability to do this,(and it's ability to do anything but fill up a jpeg image for that matter) but this is part of the specs for the AMD Athlon64. I'm not sure how it works....amd's website quotes the FSB as 800MHZ, with something about 1600MT/s after it. I would guess it's much like intel's hyperthreading technology, since it's called hypertransport.

Can anybody clarify what all this hypermumbojumbo is all about?

Does this mean that laptops now have A.D.D.?

I think I'm gonna take a pass on the MX51. No answers to my calls/e-mails and now my latest e-mail was bounced back to me. So, it'll be Hypersonic for me...unless I give in to my urges to try Alienware, again. HA!!

Forget about Michael's. I've done some more research and, as of today, there are 4 domestic resellers for the Athlon 64 notebook: Voodoo, Hypersonic, Hyperdata and Sunrex...no mention of Michael's Computers at all.

I just couldn't bring myself to risk another disappointment with Alienware, so I ordered an Aviator AX6 from Hypersonic. It'll be a few weeks before it ships, but I'll post a review and some pictures when I get it.

Michael might be some bum who sells laptops that "fell out of a truck". His office is a cardboard box and his technical support is an old answering machine where you leave messages and he never gets back to you.

hey everyone! i'm new to the board. ive been reading the board for a few weeks now. what a great community! i finally found a reason to post. man.... if this MX51 is real and michael's computer is legit...then my money goes to the MX51. the specs looks awesome. pc3400 ddr400 mem????! wtf? i've been searching around for info about this place and i cant seem to find much. i looked them up in the better business bureau (http://www.bbbsouthland.org/) and they checked out ok. i looked up info about the website and it seems that it was created back in 1999. they claimed to have been around since 96. maybe they didnt go online until 99? they claimed to have had a preview or review of some sort in the dec issue of computer gaming world. can anyone verify this? they also claim to have a "kick ass award" from maximum pc for the other stuff that they have. it seems too good to be true. it probably a load of ****.

Interesting...I've sent several e-mails and haven't received a single response. I'm tempted to order, but not without having some questions answered.

Now, the website claims that the MX51 can display a resolution of up to 2048x1536, has PC3400 DDR memory, and it weighs only 4.53 pounds?????

I've been keeping in close contact with Michael Gonzalas of Michaels Computers. He emails me back very quickly. He said the review will probably out in the January edition that will go on sale any day.

I was very leary of the 80GB 7200rpm HD. He told me that he had Western Digital directly make this drive for them. I have contacted WD about this claim and will hopefully hear something on Monday.

I've also talked to Michael personally on the phone and he is sharp.

http://ww1.prweb.com/releases/2003/11/prweb87646.htm is a free website service, and you can post anything on releases. He could have just made that whole thing up.

So what is the verdict on this company? If all this is really true, then it seems like a great combo. All the power of the Sager's with only 4.5 pounds of weight. Why has this not been talked about more?? The price is basically the same. I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts about what is really going on with this company.

I personally think its fake. If you want an Athlon64, get it from Voodoo or Hypersonic.
