Adding 2nd Hard drive

Thread Starter
hi everyone... i just installed a second HD into my 8790... the manual says you have to set the HD jumpers to cable select mode in order for windows to recognize both. after following those direction Windows recognized both HDs in the device manager BUT the new HD DOESN'T show up under my computer, so i can't access it...

DOES ANYONE have any experience adding a second HD into the 8790 that can tell me what i might have done wrong?

i set up the jumpers covering the two bottom pins as shown on the hitachi HD sticker... the original HD that came with the 8790 is a toshiba and it doesn't have a diagram for jumper settings... i assumed that it would be the same as the hitachi....

thank you thank you thank you.... ren

Try left clicking "My Computer" --> Manage --> Disk Management --> Find Drive (Normally DISK 1), then partition it and format it. It should then become available.

What's that about jumpers , I did not receive any such thing with my HD'S ? Now the second is not detected and also causes the computer to freeze after windows login.

Best Regards

Sager tech told me that jumpers were not necessary. I also had the same problem trying to add an additional HD last year. I hadn't tried the disk mgmt idea that G mentioned. I'll be trying that out pretty soon once I get my 8790 set up and going again.

I puchased an extra 60 gb drive from CompUSA on special a while back. Installed without changing or adding any jumpers. Went to Disk Management, set drive to "Active" I think. All of mine are installed working drives, so I'm not sure what the exact terminology would be. You just RIGHT click the drive and the option is there. Once active, partition and/or format.

You shouldn't need jumpers to have Windows recognize your new drive.
Just be sure to format it the correct way and you should be fine.
