Pentium M question

I have a 1.6 in my i9300. Under 'System Properties' it will say it's at 1.6Ghz one second and 798Mhz the next second. Why is this happening? What does this mean?

Well remember that you are using a notebook system, and one of the most important things in notebooks is conserving energy. So the pentium M's are programmed to throttle to conserve power. Lower cpu speed = less power used. So your notebook automatically does this when it deems fit. So if you are playing a game, it will stay at 1.6, but if you are using word or surfing the internet, it will throttle down to save power since you are not even using nor need 1.6 to do those apps. If you have your computer plugged in nearly almost all the time, you can change this in windows under the power managment settings. Pretty easy to do yourself. Hope that helped.

wow I think that will help him..

This happens when my computer is plugged in. Not on the battery. I'm also running several programs and watching a movie. So I would think the clock speed should be higher.

It's likely your power-management profile (possibly the quickstep version of it as well).

The Pentium M automatically throttles when needed. This happens instantly- when the system needs more power, it jumps to the max speed, does its thing, and then instantly throttles down to idle speed. What are you using to measure CPU speed?

Try Speedswitch XP--> http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/. I think this keeps it at max all the time if you set it to not allow demotion. I'm still playing with it, but My Computer always reports 1.99Ghz now so I think it's working. Later,

System information or System properties.

I'm talking about the General Tab under System Properties. It says "Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 2.00Ghz"

Then on the line below that it says "1.99Ghz, 1.00 GB of RAM".

Are we looking in the same place? Let me know and I'll look somewhere else.

Centrino Hardware Control will also allow you to control your mhz level (I have mine at full power when plugged in, half power when on battery).

I'm trying that out right now.

The program seems very nice. Are there any more progams like it?
Just fyi, that program does stuff that windows will do on its own so you are just wasting hard drive space... but it is a nice program to have to centralize everything you need.

Does windows tell you your cpu temps? Does windows allow you to set your cpu voltage?

So can you tell me how to tell windows to NEVER demote the processor? Also, I think the entire size for Speed step is under 5 meg so with 60 GB I'm not too worried about it.
Thanks,
JW

--EDIT-- Speedstep is 667k
