Ferrari 4005: Other Reviews are Misleading! - Page 2

Great review! I can understand how you feel about that machine, as I've got pretty much the same thing (just a different processor), and I feel the same way. Sorry to hear about your being bed ridden, that's a bummer. Glad you have something enjoyable to do though!

As for gaming recommendations, I would try out "Unreal Tournament 2004." It's got spaceships AND killing in it. And you can talk to people with a microphone, while playing. Quite enjoyable, and it's actually relaxing. You shouldn't have a problem playing it in bed (I know I do it all the time), as long as you have a mouse. You can get the demo and try it out for free, if you're interested. If you don't have a lapdesk, using a mouse in bed can be quite difficult, so I recommend one if you need to game at all (Targus has one that has an area for your mouse to run on).

Keep up with the good info!

Enjoyed your review Cmlevy! I'm teetering between a Ferrari 4005 and z70v at the moment and your review is nudging me ever so slightly into the Ferrari camp (but then I look at the price tag and then inch back to the middle )

If you're bedridden but have full control of your arms (which it sounds like you do since you can type!) then what about MMORPG's? If you have a good optical mouse and keyboard, then you can hook both up to the Ferrari and just kick back using the keyboard on your lap, the mouse on the bed, and the Ferrari on the rest. Might possibly give you more review material (the setup might not work for fast-paced games ala FPS-types as you might need more precision than the setup I recommended grants you.)

Cheefulnut -

Thanks for suggestion. BTW, the review has not changed one bit. No surprises. Everything rock solid. One note. The screen size gives you a large keyboard area. You must keep a can of air near by! My only concern remains the bottom of the keys catching on your finger when you depress them all the way. It's more of a sensation than a problem as of now.

Nice review. Different.
Regarding your slow t-pad tracking problem, one thing that worked for me on 2 different laptops was installing the MS intellipoint software (driver for MS pointing devices, u can download it from the Microsoft website if u don't have a MS mouse lieing around) and then configure the mouses speed to your hearts content through that.
For some reason, the MS inetllipoint drivers supercede whatever other pointing device driver is installed on there. In fact, at 1 point my other functions like corner tapping etc. (Synaptics t-pad) didn't work after installing the intellipoint software so I had to re-install the Synaptics drivers again, and the speed that it was set at was not affected by the Synaptics drivers installation.

Give it a go and let me know if that fixes your problem. I'm almost certain it will.

Studio54 - Microsoft has a 5.2 version of Intellipoint that has multiple models of "mice" to slect from. I can't ever recall seeing an Intellipoint touchpad. So, which mouse version did you install? Thanks for the comments and support.

I was not clear in my post. I didn't install intellipoint drivers for a touchpad, but for a wireless mouse that I occasionally use.

It doesn't matter which drivers you use, but if u want to use the one I did, I'm not sure what its called but its the wireless mouse w/ tiltwheel. I think its called wireless MS Intellipoint Explorer or something like that.

(Otherwise, nothing like a Dell keyboard!) It's fast......, clear, quiet, barely warm, good looking and classy. Quality of build is the best I've seen. So that's it for now.
not to be rude but my bro has the acer you have its not quiet and its not warm its hot. I think people just have different deggress of what is quiet and whats not quiet. But then again i love the looks of the machine is just mazing anyways enjoy

This heat and noise can vary with the specific notebook used as well. I've heard of people sending their loud ones back (due to some problem they were having), and receiving identical notebooks back that were quieter. I personally haven't undervolted mine (risks scare me at times, when dealing with an $1800 investment), but if I think it's too loud or hot, I just turn down the CPU speed, and it gets nice and cool right away (without nary a loss in performance). BUT, the advantage to the particular setup of the F-4000/TM 8104 is that owners can play games (though the machine does get louder during this, of course) with great frame rates in a thin and light. Right now "Gunz Online: The Duel" is my biggest addiction, and I get 200+ fps when plugged in. I also get over 100 fps on battery power!

But back to the heat and noise levels... and how good looking this machine is. I still haven't seen one that I think looks better (whether Asus or not) than the 8104 (same chassis as the F-4005).

PS- and Jeffrey, the widescreen is much better than the normal screen.

I guess the issues of noise and heat are as subjective as you can get when it comes to electronics. All I can tell you is based upon my experience, which is fairly extensive from a notebook ownership and use standpoint, this models is both quiet and cool. This unit is warm at worse at the bottom. The keyboard stays cool. Admittedly, I am not pushing it like a gamer.

I'm very excited, such a streamlined and slick look. Nice keyboard (but the spacebar is set to low in the case, thumb hits surrounding surface), very nice screen, and fan noise is very low (by my standards). As to the heat, it does get a bit warm in the lap.

So far, I'm a happy camper. I intend to purchase the modular bay battery for the 8104, I'm told it should work...

How is the noise relative to the 600M? My 600M is dead silent in windows etc. Does the fan blow at while navigating windows? My A4 with a more robusts video card seems to spin at half speed constantly. It drives me crazy.

Four Months Later - It's still a MACHINE!

Well it's four month since my initial review for this thread. Everything remains identical except that I would upgrade my complaint a little on the keyboard. The keys are a little flimsy, like a Dell. The sides of the keys seem short and you catch your fingers on adjacent keys when you depress a key. This is not all of the time and the catching is more of a feeling than an actual mistyping.

The computer runs smooth as silk and the subjective areas (heat, screen, noise, weight, speakers, etc.) are of no concern.

Even the price has held which makes a purchaser feel better. I guess the Machine has withstood all the reviews very well. Oh, by the way, my nightmare remains the release of a faster and lighter machine (even if not cheaper).

I am somewhat concerned that the sound card won't adequately support the new Bose Quiet Comfort 2 earphones so I am looking at a USB sound card. The Bose are on order so I don't have the information yet. I posted this concern in a new thread but no responses yet.

In these four months I have not found another laptop that I would have preferred! I hope the rest of you feel the same way.

Dude i'm right with you! From a 3200 to a 4005 (had it for 2months), i'm extremely happy too! People have mentioned the heat, i've found in normal usage it's barely warm (mobilemeter tells me it's running at 41C). The fan is always on, but compared to my old desktop, it's near silent! When playing games (FEAR, Doom3, HL2), the machine does get warm, especially on the touchpad, that's when the fan's higher setting kicks in.

I've not found anything else which suits my needs so well (although i'd still like to have a multi-region drive!!!). Excellent review cmlevy.

Multi-region drive? You can use DVD Shrink 3.2 if you're having problems with DVD regions. If you know the original region, you can make the DVD copy region free. Just some info on that from my experience.

The Ferrari and 8104 (same notebook, different processor and looks) have both stood up well over time. I remember back in Feb, and then in the summer, when each notebook came out and how big of a deal it was.

And I wouldn't worry too much about a faster, cheaper notebook coming out soon. It will happen. Esp with dual core notebooks coming out in '06. But it doesn't change the fact that this notebook is still a great notebook.

Dude, don't mean to hijack this thread, but after a fairly long discussion about the 4005's drive, it's currently un-multi-regionable (i'm sure i made that word up!). Whether you try to flash it or use a software solution.

As for the dual core machines, yes they will be awesome, although for now, my 4005 does everything i need it to do, mainly surf, word process, email, the occasional game and a heck of a lot of MSN!

It looks even better in the flesh....I have no noise problem btw, even with my Lapcool2 running all the time. The high res matte screen is a site to behold
