Ferrari 4005: Other Reviews are Misleading! - Page 3

Update

I had to look for some file on the Dell D600 from work. The back still confines me a lot to bed so I am an expert on heat eminating from the bottom of the chasis (use your imagination, or not!).

There is no comparison. With that little D600, I could fry an egg. (I don't like where this is going!). I have always conceded that heat perception was probably subjective -- but no more. The Machine is cold in comparison to the Dell.

Also, the fan going up and down in speed is definitely more noisy. Okay, I still concede that it's subjective but the ramping up and down of the speed is definitely more noticable on the Dell.

I've tried to be fair in all my reviews so I now have to concede that although the DEL key is misplaced on the Dell, the actual feel of the key caps on the Dell is better. The keys feel like they are thicker plastic. The Machine gets a little flimsy here with the caps feeling like you may break them off if you catch the bottom of them when the key is depressed. But the entire Dell keypad feels mushy.

No matter what, I still can't type on the Dell because the DEL key is misplaced so there, ultimately, is no issue for me. The Machine by a mile.

Bleh. I guess everyone has their own opinion of a "perfect" laptop, but I was very unhappy with the Ferrari 4005. I bought it when my Sony S-series was sent in for repairs, but was so unhappy with it that I returned it. This post is not intended to "troll" your post. I believe that every proper review should mention both the positives and negatives of a product, and this post is intended as a counter-point to the many positives of the 4005 that you brought up.

Screen: The screen isn't as bright and vibrant as I would have liked (I prefer the glassy, reflective screens like the XBrite). The resolution was also a bit TOO high also... made everything too small. And when I went to adjust the font size, some of my programs would scale the window in such a way that some buttons were not visible. These are more personal preferences, and not any deficiency in the Ferrari 4005 itself.

Weight - Going to 6.5lbs from 4.5lbs. Might not sound like much, but it was definitely noticable.

Size - Going from 13.3" screen to 15.4" screen. Feels HUGE.

Appearance - I will say one thing about the Ferrari. EVERYBODY who saw it commented on how cool it looks. EVERYBODY. Even the TSA agent working the X-ray machine in airport security.

Fan, heat - Laptop would get very hot, fan went on constantly. Playing World of Warcraft using stock drivers, stock settings, would overheat the GPU and cause WoW to crash after 10 or 15 minutes. Totally unacceptable for a stock setup. Only by underclocking the GPU could I get it stable.

Keyboard - Some people love the curved layout, some people hate it. I, for one, hate it.

Price - Much more expensive than other similarly-configured laptops (ie, Acer Travelmate 8000 series). Most of that extra cost seems to go into the appearance and name badging. Worth it to some, not worth it to me.

In conclusion, the Ferrari 4005 was not the laptop for me. I could see how some people would love the Ferrari 4005, but it just did not suit my tastes.

Minor "Complaints"

K-man:

1. You jumped two weight classes with the 6 pound Machine. You had to realize that a 50% increase in weight over the 4 pound Sony would be very significant. Even a 5.5 lb machine makes a big difference over a 6 pounder. At 4 lbs you're down to a flyweight.

2. If Ferrari accurately discloses the weight, why did you buy it? There are plenty of 6 pounders that you could have swung from your shoulder before buying the Machine.

3. Yes, a 15.4 inch screen is massive compared to a 13 inch. Is that a complaint or a commendation.

4. The Machine's fan is on all the time. My F Series Sony is hotter.

5. You must have expected a 6 lb laptop to run games hot. That's why some people go to 12 pounders -- to cool off. If you think that moving from 4 to 6 pounds is a big move, wait until you triple your Sony weight from 4 pounds to 12, all so that you can be cooler. Your rotator cuff may tear but you'll be cooler. So, having a 6 pounder that runs games a little warm is what - a complaint or a joy?

6. I just can't believe the curved keyboard remains an issue after a few hours of use.

So, why did you return the Machine? Sounds like you got a theatre size screen that prevented surgery on your shoulder by generatinug a little heat?

Oh, BTW, how does the Sony do with games? Screen, video card, heat okay?

Yeah, I am aware that 6lbs is about standard for a 15” laptop. And that I could have done my research over this before buying. Again, I am not counting this as a “negative” against the Ferrari, just a reason why my personal preference makes me like a smaller laptop more.

I’m also not complaining about discomfort, when it comes to temperature. What I am complaining about is that the laptop gets so hot, that it overheats and crashes. Overheating, in stock configuration, to the point where the laptop crashes is just unacceptable in any laptop. Some people say they have had the same problems with the Ferrari. Others say they do not, and that I happened to have gotten a bad apple. Either way, it left me with a negative impression.

With the keyboard, again, it is a personal preference. Some like it, some get used to it. I, however, find it annoying to switch from a straight keyboard to an angled one when I switch from desktop to laptop.

I returned the machine just because it did not suit my preferences. I prefer something a little smaller (theatre-size screen is not a good thing when you’re in an airplane), a little lighter, not as expensive, that could also game. For me, the Sony S-series is the perfect fit. It has a smaller screen with glossy coating, it doesn’t overheat under its stock configuration, its heat and battery life are great for me (especially when undervolted), and its got enough GPU power to play the games that I want it to.

Hmmm...I think maybe you did get a bad apple .I did 3.5 hours of HL2 last night and the Machine got warm, but not hot hot and never faultered. But, I keep it sitting on top of a Lapcool2...I haven't checked differences with and without.

The MACHINE - A YEAR LATER!! Who Mislead Whom?

It's about a week short of a year since I wrote the initial review starting this string. It's hard to believe.

Well, nothing much has changed. I had one video problem which Acer fixed in a week. Some regulator went, creating a horizontal line across the screen. Acer's service was great.

Last night I unintentionally did a "stress test" on the MACHINE, all because my BellSouth DSP/wireless went down. At that point, I didn't know what the cause of my Internet problem was so I started wailing away/pounding on the keyboard and palm rest. My wife, who hates the MACHINE because I give it too much attention (she is jealous), woke up screaming at me. If she didn't I think the MACHINE would have learned how to fly. (I guess that would have been a different write-up).

Well that's my version of a stress test. No damage done. I rebooted it just in case and everything runs perfect.

Well, that's my one year update. I can't see increasing the memory based upon other's tests. My hard drive is plenty big and seems to run fine at 5,400 rpm. Doesn't seem to be much I can do to update the MACHINE. So other than dream about a Core 2, this MACHINE does everything for me without a missed step.

Travel used to be a big issue for me. I used to lug a 10 pounder around the airports with dual 3 1/2 inch drives. Doesn't sound like much, but it was a beauty. Zenith 181. But I haven't done much travel in the last few years. When I think about travel, however, I do a little dreaming about the F-1000.

So other than a few dreams, I am very happy with this MACHINE. Oh, one new thing. Go to movielink.com or cinemanow.com and download a movie and watch it using BOSE-quality earphones. Just about as good as watching on my 52" Toshiba DLP. The MACHINE's screen and sound was unbelievable. (Would it be better using the headphones with an Audilogy PC card, or does that only improve speakers? If so, why?) To those of you who haven't tried these downloaded movies, give it a try. You can begin to watch the movies within a few minutes of beginning the download. You don't have to wait for the full download. It just keeps streaming behind you and with good bandwidth, it keeps up. I use wireless g and it did fine. Once it interrupted and asked me to wait. 15 seconds later the movie was ready to go and completed the two hour show. Oh, and if you are going to watch them in bed, as I do, put a towel or pillow on your lap! I have always contended that heat was no problem with the MACHINE but a two hour movie will heat up your groin a little too much. Maybe I got a taste of the gamer's point of view on this.

I wish I had more for you. Kinda boring. I love my MACHINE and due to some circumstances beyond your control, and mine, it is used most of every day. It probably has 5 years of use compared to most - except you gamers. Interestingly to me, that includes the keyboard. Except for some shininess of a few keys and the space bar, there is no wear and tear.

Since I may have used this MACHINE more than most, if you have any qustions, feel free to ask. I have the time.

A Final Thought: I just hope the F-5000 and F-1000 are not lost in the shuffle of Core 2. Acer missed a good 2 month period of sales following the announcement without inventory. I wonder if they will change the CPU in view of the AMD price cut, although I don't know how it affects the Turion. (They should delay production, if possible, and upgrde the units. Acer knew what was coming from Intel; I wonder why they committted to AMD and, on top of that delayed shipping). Us Ferrari owners paid top, top dollar but we knew we were getting top performance to go along with the good looks. If it only had medicore performance, we would not have paid the premium. I am even thinking of going to the E6600 for a desktop.

My best ramblings to all of you,
