Alienware Angst

What a great first post this will be...

So back in November of last year I finally received my Sentia (About a month after the expected ship date and multiple calls - as many on here have experienced). I was so excited, I opened up the black box turned on the machine and could barely contain myself - until I noticed a dead pixel against the black alienware splashscreen. I was slightly disappointed, but this is something that I learned to deal with.

Since November I've been using the machine daily (I'm a developer and baby the machine) and couldn't be happier - Well, not minding the dead pixel and the DVD drive's innate propensity to 'fall' out of the system.

A couple of weeks ago my machine was starting to run rather sluggish (as it does after working with .Net for a few hours) and decided to do a soft restart. The machine shut down as normal, however nothing displayed on boot - just a black screen, no alien eyes and the caps lock/scroll lock/num lock were non-responsive. I then proceeded to shut down the machine. I waited a few seconds, powered it up - the machine was dead.

I called into tech support and after spending approximately an hour removing the memory/wirelesscard/battery/cmos battery etc. with a nice fellow, he finally convinced me (begrudgingly) to send my machine in. I received an email with a fedex label (ground of course) and some instructions for packaging the machine. He also stated that the system could be in their possession for up to two weeks... I'm sorry, but downtime of a month to repair a system is unacceptable - so I called in and was able to receive 2nd day shipping after quite a bit of arguing. So I sent in my notebook.

A week later - today - I received a call on my cell at 7:30am my time from a tech asking me to give him a call. I called back at 7:45am and the tech was out for a couple hours so I left him a message. I received a call a couple hours later and to my surprise they're refusing to fix my machine under warranty as they're claiming that I spilled some liquid on the machine. I was sent a couple of pictures (taken from the memory compartment) where something had corroded the memory connectors. I have never spilled anything on my laptop, and I sure as hell wouldn't send it in if I had. Alienware now wants to charge me approximately $600.00 to replace my notebook's motherboard. I asked to take pictures of the other side of the motherboard (where the keyboard is) for further 'evidence of spillage.' I will then call back once I receive these.

Needless to say, I'm rather upset...

What would you do?

I have a love/hate relationship with my alienware sentia. It's a nice machine but I know I have set myself up for a future disappointment. Alienware is a company that is built on the basis of making gaming machines for gamers. Dell is a company that is built on the basis of making business machines for business. I wish I would have realized this before I commited to the Sentia.

If I find myself in the situation you are in, I would yank out the hard drive and memory and go order a Dell 700m. In my situation the downtime associated with trying to get Alienware to fix something would more than pay for Dell 700m. FYI there is a 40% off coupon on the Dell Inspiron laptops right now GPL3SMPXB6JKSB.

semi,

You should probably introduce yourself as an Alienware employee first, you know, for security reasons.

Since the damage is on the bottom of the laptop it doesn't mean that something had to be spilled directly on top of it. Maybe you accidentally placed it on a wet surface. Maybe not.

Let us know how it goes.

Sorry, to hear about your situation. You can PM Alienware JuanG or Alienware Steve, they are Alienware employees and they will look into it. They have helped other people on the forums here as well.

Hope everything gets fixed.

Well to update - nothing could be done and I sure wasn't about to dish out $600.00 for a new motherboard. I had them send the notebook back to me... to my surprise when I opened my laptop there was an invoice for $160.00. Alienware has got to be worst company I have EVER dealt with.

I'm currently parting out the notebook and I'm going to buy an ASUS - I should've done this in the first place.

whoa cowboy, your pc is under 1 year old, they are obliged to fix it, if you say you never spilt stuff on it then its upto them to prove that it wasnt like that when it left the factory, i would send the pc back and demand that they fix it for you as its still under its first year of warranty.....
also AW wash there machines, i dont know what with but on my bill there is an item where it says pc washed ? it could of been like that from day one if it was there stuff that corroded the mem, as it takes a long time for corrosion to start if it isnt acid/alkaline based....
also if the keyboard hasnt got dried stuff on it then chances are it was like that when you recieved it unless you opened your pc then spilt stuff inside when the cover was off....

Labor / shipping everything came out to around 600... If I could just buy the motherboard for a reasonable price I'd deffinately jump on it.
