My Xps Gen 2 On The Aircraft Story

Before i start i have to mention the attention the XPSGEN 2 got while going though customs.
2 guys both asked me what this machine was and where did i get it from.
Shows how dumb airport guys are when it has DELL STAMPED ACROSS THE BACK OF IT for all to see LOL...
When i got on the plane i really was hopeful that this machine would work using the power coming to the seat.
However it was not to be.
The XPSGEN 2 will not work under any circumstances using power on a flight.
Dont let anyone tell you diff.
I even ordered one of the so called AIR ADAPTERS for this model and it didnt do a thing.
I did however get 2 BATTS from EBAY which are DELL BATTS and that managed to get me through most of the flight.
This was a long haul flight to the uk and during the flight while everyone was asleep i was watching movies on my gen2
The male steward kept coming past my seat and stopping.
After a while i decided to get up and use the bathroom and in BRITISH AIRWAYS B CLASS they have something called RAID THE LARDER.
You can help yourself to crisps (USA CHIPS) AND CHOCOLATE ETC.
This guy said HEY you are the guy with the flash laptop.
Please tell me more.
I spent 30 mins telling this guy about the XPS GEN 2 and despite the fact i was on my 10th wine,i swear i sold him one.
Anyway this post is to let everyone know that despite what others may tell you.
THE XPSGEN 2 will not work on power on aircraft unless you find a craft that will give you over 100 watts of power.
Also since arriving back DELL HAVE CONFIRMED THIS and offered to exchange my GEN 2 FOR A 9300 FOR NO PRICE DIFF
They tell me the 9300 will work without fail on any aircraft power.
I declined and had them send me a free battery.
Also dont be afraid to order the batts for this machine on EBAY
They are the real deal.
I used them on this flight.
WORKED LIKE A DREAM

Sorry to hear it was a male steward that showed you the attention. It would have been better if a female attendent had showed you the attention instead. Next time pop a chick flix in your notebook. That aughta attract one or two I should think.

Seriously though... thanks for the heads up on the power supply issue. Hopefully the airlines will see the need for more power and provide it. I doubt they'll be able to keep up with all the changes in the pc world though.

And I thought 130W wasn't much to ask for.

I was on a China Eastern flight (Airbus 340) and they had regular outlets on the back of the seat. Unfortunately they weren't activated for some reason, as a number people with laptops plugged them in and then started scratching their heads when the adapter wouldn't light up.

Honestly though unless you're in Business or First class it's really too cramped to use the xps. I only pulled it out on the way there because my girlfriend was in the seat beside me and didn't mind me crowding her.

Unfortunately on the flight back I was in an older plane without plugs and I couldn't try it out again.

I still wonder if it would have worked if you booted off battery first, then plugged in the adapter and kept it running off the battery preset. The system should only pull about 70 watts in that state I think.

Heh, I just need to find a power adapter that will work on 115v 400hz and I will be able to use my laptop on our aircraft at work. We've got 115v outlets all over the place in the cabin... I just need to find the engineer that decided they needed to be 400hz and kick him in the arse.

Not gonna happen near anytime soon. The computer in the plane deals with how the power is routed and changing how much power each port gets would require changing the computer in the plane and probably a ton of wiring. Sucks that the XPS2 can't be plugged in though. I guess for long-haul flights you just need 3 or 4 batteries.

mmm... my i8600 worked just fine on 400Hz.
Anyone have tried to plug the XPS brick into a real 115v 400Hz outlet on board?

10 hrs with Electrovaya Powerpad 160

Works like a charm for long overseas trips.

Just bring a 12volt car battery with one of those radio shack converters for AC/DC and plug that puppy in!

the XPS gen 2 at most only uses about 55-60 watts if your not playing games(under max CPU load), so I am suprised it didnt work, though if the 9300 works then I am sure you could just use the 9300 power adapter, i believe before it just runs the comp at slower speeds, but it still works with the XPS gen 2 right? or maybe I am wrong.

I could try, I have an i6000 power adapter kicking around somewhere and I think it's exactly the same as the 9300.

Because im English and i travel home a lot from the states.
The flight home is 9 hours and flight back is 10 so 4x batts equals about 8 hours of dvd time.

4 batteries, power adapter, xps2, and other junk... damn your carry-on must weigh a ton!
