Hey guys

I am helping my friend upgrade his dell 8600 stock intel pro 2100 b card to intel 2200 b/g card... I installed the card for him but the laptop does not reconize the card. I even updated the bios to revision a17. HAs anyone done this upgrade? Let me know thanks

The Intel 2200 is a pain for a start. I lose the connection all the time, and its transfer rates has NEVER shown as 54Mbit for me, only 48Mbit on occasion, most of the time dropping to 1Mbit.

However, to fix your dilema, you should try reseating the card. Take it out and put it back in. Sometimes they just don't go in right the first time.

I did this about a year ago it was easy. I had no problems. I had the 2200 drivers ready after I put the new card in. Then just installed them and it's worked great eversince. You might try removing it through hardware and reboot, when windows wants to try and install its drivers cancel and install the dell drivers.

is the card def working? should be very easy to do. But i dont recommend any intel wifi cards.. mine constantly drops.... you should have gone for the dell version... 1350 which is more stable.

Yep, the Dell 1350 is good. My sister has one, and its excellent.

Can you try it in another laptop?

I will talk to my friend about it later today... THe problem is his 8600 is not recognizing the pro 2200 b/g card (purchased on ebay haha) 99% of the times when u install new hardware windows should say "new hardware detected" then u can install the drivers etc. I am thinking the card is defective. I upgraded my intel pro 2100 on my gateway m505x to a intel pro 2200 and my card didnt work either... but all i had to do was upgrade my bios and it has been working great ever since the install.

I tried to upgrade my friends dell 8600 bios with no luck: (

anyways I will keep u guys up to date. Thanks for the responses!

Did you try to install the drivers for it, even though Windows XP didn't do its little pop up for new hardware. I would uninstall the old drivers for the 2100, then reseat the 2200, then install the latest drivers from Intel. If that doesn't work your card is dead, its not the laptop. Also I can't see how a BIOS update has anything to do with installing a new Mini PCI card, as long as it fits in the slot and is up to spec, the rest is up to Windows or Linux.

Hear are the Windows drivers for your card:
Intel 2200BG and 2915ABG Software 9.0.2.0

Is sounds defective. If you can't try another machine, I would suggest dropping the seller and email.

Yes i did try to install the updated bg wireless pro 2200 drivers... the laptop just does not recognize the card for some reason. I only updated the bios on my m505x because the older bios would NOT accept the card properly; functions such as my short cut wireless button key etc were disable in the older bios. IN addition the pentium M logo would show up at start up instead of the centrino logo lol

Updating the bios for my gateway fixed all these problems. Anyways I will try to unistall the wireless pro 2100 software and then try to install the pro 2200.

I will keep you guys updated thanks!

Running into the same problem, swapped a 2100 for a 2200BG and my 8600c recognises the card, pointed to latest Intel drivers and all appears to be ok.

In the bios bluetooth now says not installed and the wireless radio does not appear to switch on, FN 2 has no effect.

Put the old card back in and everything works again.

i use driver version 9.0.0.61 dated 10/21/2004 from intel's download section. it is the only driver that will always work and not drop the connection, or run very slowly. even the recomended dell drivers are flaky. my 8600 is very much alike, it may work for you. try them out. 2200bg card is what i have
