NVidia and Microsoft Update

Just a little note to tell you all what I just experienced. XP downloaded a Windows update (automatic setting) and after install and reboot I started to play GW. After about 30 minutes my computer locked up. I restarted it and fired up GetThermal to find my video card temp at 127C. Imagine my surprise. Did some checking and found the video card fan no longer worked. After trying some different stuff I did a systemrestore to a point before the updates and now everything works fine.

Wow, that's strange. I had the automatic updates kick in last night, but it didn't affect my 6800 ultra...

Well

Updated and pc refused to boot/safe/last good nothing...would get to windows opening screen and freeze with a ticking noise from speakers.

After several attempted reboots, I went to BIOS and set OC from Auto to Normal.

Boom! Restarted perfectly, went back to BIOS, set OC back to Auto and no issues since. I thought it was just me, but it does appear that I'm not alone experiencing some problems. All has been well since then though, so hopefully...it cured itself.

6800's have a shutdown temp of between 110-120 so by rights your card should of shut its self down when it reached that temp, strange that it didnt, my fan on my 6800gt died a while back and it auto shutdown after it hit 120oC and I crapped mehself, but when pc restarted temp was 87oC and I had a picture, but since temp was so high i decided to shut her down anyway and check things out... cant understand what XP update would of did to make it that high, but you never know.....

The XP download ate Alienguise - had to reload it. Had to reload my wireless connection. Thought I had a virus until I figured out it was a Windows update.

What a statement. I am a truck driver and was one the road for 2 weeks, got home and fired up the laptop. Windows automatically downloaded the update while I checked my e-mail. When finished I install them (express) and then went to bed. Got up this moring and started to play GW and the machine locked up after about 30 minutes. Like stated above I did some checking and found the Video fan not working. The ONLY thing that had changed was the update by Windows. Once I did the restore, everything works fine so I could care less if you believe my statement or not. I just posted to let eveyone know in case they had the same problem, but don't worry I'll not post here again.

I think you might have misunderstood J. Clausse's post...
anyway, it looks like you weren't the only one having a problem after the update. I always wonder if I'm making a big mistake before I download MS updates.
