Knoppix cardmgr problem

Thread Starter
It freezes on bootup unless I load "Knoppix nopcmcia"

and then the net doesn't work.

If I run using QEMU from Windows linux boots without freezing and the net works in QEMU.

I'm running a sager 3880-V and I'm trying to run Knoppix 4.0 Live. If you need more information I'll promptly post it but I am un-aware of how to remedy this. I can't learn linux without the net there to read stuff either so I'm stuck. Google hasn't helped me but I've looked for hours and hours.

try acpi=off
When I tried on kanotix (similar to knoppix) I had the same problem, acpi=off will disable battery control and usage, but will allow pcmcia to work. When i did a hard disk installed I could have both enabled with no problems

Do you run knoppix with the frame buffer? Like "Knoppix fb=1024x768" cheat codes. I'm sure you have enough memory 256 or above. I have 2 laptops and they both run Knoppix without freezing. Both have 512mb memory and one is an AMD and the other a Pentium M. One is a compaq and the other a Toshiba. I have the Knoppix 4.0 on DVD and it works well. Did you try the md5sum on the download? Maybe the Knoppix isn't complete. You might try Kanotix which is a knoppix clone that is made for Laptops. It has the 2.6.11.11 Linux kernel. This distro not only picks up my wireless card but also my "winmodem" and the mousepad, which Knoppix doesn't. Kanotix is on a cd version 700mb but has built in more stuff for laptops.

I'm curently having the same exact problem while trying use different livecds. Auditor, DSL, and gentoo all lock up while booting unless I use nopcmcia flag at boot. I have a Sager 5320. I'm guessing this is a problem specific for sager laptops.

I seriously doubt that it's limited to sager. I've heard/read reports of other makes having the same quirk. It's just a memory mapping thing. Check this http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=116103 currently the last post in the thread.
