Sorry for not answering for so long.. the forums stopped sending me emails when the thread updated for some reason.

To answer your questions:
I did actually start with the ferarri xp install, but found it.. weird, as if some options that should be there weren't. In any case, I wanted to know exactly what was on my lappy, so I just backed up the actually useful applications acer bundled and reinstalled a windows xp professional sp2. Maybe that helps, propably it doesn't...
So, for some reason the 5.10 drivers release by ATI work for me and not others. At least there's a much easier workaround with the Fn-F5 trick in case my drivers ever resort to the black screen issue again. Which might actually be the case, since I'm going to attempt to install the new 5.13 drivers now available at
http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/ . I've read that the jump in performance from 5.10 to 5.11 was just about phenomenal and I'm itching to see if I can squeeze a few more frames out of my miniature nuclear furnace that is my ferarri 3200.
