9300 display questions - Page 2

i love my wuxga. it's beautiful. i LOVE the amount of real esate it gives me. i can have two browswers/word documents/watever open side by side. how awesome is that. i'm running at 96dpi and i never have to squint. if you have bad eyes, it might be a bad choice for you. i play HL2 at 1920 x 1200 with minimal settings (AA, AF, detail, haven't even tried with yet) and it still looks FANTASTIC. i've never once found a moment when i regretted getting the wuxga. if you're a big gamer, the wuxga might not be for you because of performance, but if you do anything else, and/or seldmomly gamee, the wuxga rocks.

No 17inch desktop LCD goes up to 1600x1200, for that matter 99% of 19" LCD's only support 1280x1024 max.....in fact I know of NO 19inch desktop LCD that supports 1600x1200. It only once you move to the 20.5 (2001FP) and higher do you see 1600x1200 on a desktop LCD.

The 2405 and the apple ones are the only ones to support 1900x1200 on a desktop LCD. These facts alone tell you why most people think 1900x1200 on a 17inch laptop LCD is way too small.....when 95+% of the hardware industry wont support 1900x1200 on anything less than a 24inch LCD.

The only thing that stopped me from getting the XPS2 was the high res. I bought a maxed out 9300 with the XGA only because I could not get the XGA on the XPS2. Dell should have given us that option.

I got the WUXGA mostly for desktop use, I thought it might be too high a resolution but it works great for me. Getting the WUXGA screen strictly in the hopes of running games at 1900X1200 is just plain dumb. It can play most games right now at that res, but in 6 months it wont be able to, which would be the case with almost any video card. Thats why I connect it to an external 1280X720 screen, it should play everything at that resolution for at least the next year.

I just want to know what you all think.

I have some criteria for the screen. At work I have 3 17" LCD monitors set at 1280x1024 and I like it (high resolution is okay with me). I also am planning on using this laptop outside and have heard that a "glare" screen helps in this regard. But, I'm also concerned about the possibility of having to play games at a non-native resolution.

Thanks!
Since you are using 1280x1024 I suggest the WXGA at 1400x900 its about the same as you are running now, WUXGA is overkill, small text, no web page uses 1920x1200, maybe one or two games can run at this resolution, so why pay for a glossy screen you can shave in, count the specs in your light bulbs and ceilings and run with a resolution that nobody supports so that you can squint at small text OR use the lcd panel at 1400x900 so you can read things nicely, Am I missing something here?? GO WITH WXGA I've used both, WUXGA is not practical and looks nice on a game or dvd does not make for a good laptop screen, WXGA is plenty bright, I dont use mine at max brightness, games and dvd's look great, alot of ignorant WUXGA purchases out there, Id say to most out there, if you ahve to ask which one, WXGA or WUXGA???? you need to go with WXGA.

The 6800 can handle WUXGA but like I said, its a waste and overkill, besides your video card will yes have to work alot harder to render all those extra pixels that you dont need anyhow.

I've finished HL2 playing at 1920 x 1200 with maximum detail (but no AA), and it still looked FANTASTIC and run smoothly (in excess of 30fps) :-)

What ? You want to see the return of unergonomic square displays ? Instead of widescreen ones ? NIE ! ;->

As I type this from my WUXGA outside, I'll say the colors look incredible, and as long as the brightness is up, you shouldn't have too much of a problem seeing the screen. It plays EQ2 (quite possibly a worse graphics engine than BF2 in terms of buggy-ness) woonnnnnderfully at 1920. I haven't noticed any sparklies in my screen, although I'm not sure of the manufacture. There is a bit of light leakage, but I've been told this goes away for almost everyone.
