rapid CMOS battery drain in laptop

Thread Starter
I was getting POST errors on my old KDS laptop (e.g., CMOS settings revert to default, loss of time, etc.). Problems went away after I replaced the CMOS battery (CR1220 3v lithium). However, the next time I used the computer (a week later), the same thing happened. I pulled the battery and it read 2.5 volts. As I didn't check the voltage before installing the battery, I suppose it could have been old. I haven't had time to get a new one. Just for grins, I checked it again today and it was down to 0.9 volts!! Something internal must be pulling it down. The previous battery lasted several years. Any ideas before I try another battery? Anyone ever had this happen before?

I had a somewhat similar occurance on an Alienware Sentia a few months back. Every other boot, or so, the LCD screen wouldn't load. Come to find out that the CMOS was corrupting itself every time I shut the thing off, so the only way to fix it was to navigate through the BIOS without the benefit of sight to reset the default configuration every time I wanted to use it.

In my case, however, I traced the problem back to an electrical issue between the power adapter and the motherboard. Apparently at some point I put a little too much stress on the power cord connector when it was attached to the mobo, and a couple leads inside the lappy broke as a result. Long story short, everytime I started the thing there would be an arc of current between the broken leads, causing the laptop to go crazy.

Not sure if this will help, but you might check to see if you have a similar issue. I didn't even know I had done anything to the power adapter until I discovered the CMOS corrupting itself.

Same problems here with an old NEC P3 notebook...i changed the cmos battery...but the thing must have some type of hardware problem.
