About to get laptop...

So I'm expecting my ordered 700m to ship out soon after ordering it. I was wondering if there is a guide anywhere here as to what we need to sequentially update in terms of drivers, security updates, bios?, etc?

Thanks everyone.

Basically what you should do when you receive it reformat. Dell installs a lot of junk on their systems that slow the system down, and waste HDD space.

For this sort of thing, you should have a look at the excellent FAQ prepared (and maintained) by sakor1 (formerly Dellsakor )

Thanks. Although that would be nice, I'm probably not going to go to the extreme of reformatting. I'd rather just go to control panel and add/remove programs.

Thanks again.

I didn't either right away, but after I did it was SOOOOOO much better. Just a thought.

Thanks again.
There are also some tips in the FAQ. I would suggest reformatting as well, because ultimately, it is worth it.

There's nothing more odd to me than someone spending extra money to upgrade from a 1.7ghz to 1.8 because "i want the speed boost", yet when they get their computer they leave all that preinstalled garbage on their system to slow it down. There's nothing like a fresh install to remind you how fast a computer can actually boot.

Anyway, i know its intimidating to reformat. But its much easier to format a disk with nothing on it yet than to format a drive with 6months of data on it.

I didn't want to do it either but I was forced to by getting a larger drive. It couldn't have been easier, practically idiot proof (familiar territory for me )

When you get the computer, make your restore cd from the start menu. That contains a lean version of XP and the necessary drivers to operate your computer. It does not contain CDRW or DVD burner software or a media player. You should make arrangments for that SW before reformatting. If you pop the 10 bucks for disks, you'll have what you need or you can take the opportunity to upgrade to better stuff from commercial sources.

To reformat, just pop the cd you made in the optical drive and follow instructions. I chose to make one partition and chose to do a long format which took about an hour. If you are reformatting your old drive and choose to keep the Dell partitions, someone else will have to cover that as I got rid of everything.

After the format the installation of XP begins and you have to stay with it as you will be asked preference questions at certain points, these are not hard questions just time zone questions etc.

After the final boot and set up you will be finished with the ionstallation and I would suggest updating all your drivers at that point. Go to Dell, plug in your service tah or model and all the current drivers will pop up and you can DL and install them. Some say it's a good idea to DL them prior to formatting and burn them to a cd, whatever floats your boat.

It really is easy and it really does make for a much more stable computer so if you can get your head right, do it.

Well, like everyone else said, reformat. Then, update all your drivers with the latest ones. Then, if you have any security software installed, update the virus definitions and what not for that.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I totally understand that reformatting is the best way to go, and I may go that route eventually, but for now I am content with a simplist approach. It is not because I'm computer illiterate, in fact I built my own desktop so I am familar with installing OS and drivers freshly, but for some reason formatting my laptop is not on the top of my priority list, especially with school and lab work on my mind.

Again, thanks everyone.
