Game Performance

Recently I got world of warcraft, sadly it doesnt perform as I expected. I understand it wont be perfect but expected more, it freezes and stutters way to often. I have a 8890 with 512 ram and 2.8 P4 and 128 radeon M10. So i decided to get more RAM, PC3200 ddr400 ram 2 gigs of it, as opposed to the pc2700 ram that is in it now. My question is will this help the problem, and is the upgrade to 2 gigs neccesary or will 1 gig be enough. Thanks in advance.

if the M10 you have is the ati radeon 9600 then your not going to get that great of performance unless you degrade the graphics in the options menu.

At least it plays though.

The M10 is the 9700 pro, not 9600.

yes you need the ram upgrade to 1 gig and it will solve your issues. your video card will play the game just fine. i used to play this game with 512 ram and geforice 4 ti 4600 and when i put 1 gig of ram in there it solved all the issues.

It's okay, but you could do better. Unfortunately, there is a correlation between power (1.8V in the gigaram) and performance.

Good but not too pricey is the Crucial, and then after that, you could also spend a few extra needless bucks and get the Mushkin, or the Kingston. They're all good companies, and everyone has their preference though.

Go with 1 x 1GB chip now, instead of having to swap out 512's later. Good luck !

Its actually the 9600 Pro.

Also, Crucial is more expensive than Kingston or Mushkin, usually. My recommendation is to just do a search on Pricegrabber and go with the lowest price you find. Nearly all the RAM makers have some kind of warranty, and the only differences you'll find in higher priced RAM (Like Corsair) will be when you're overclocking.

If you have the money, 2gb of RAM is all the better, but if you don't have the money, I'd go with Stealth's recommendation and just get one 1gb stick. Either way, though... make sure its just not your graphics settings! The 9600 is not exactly a new card, so if you're trying to pump up the graphics you're going to run into definite slowdown.

the 9600 can play the game just fine. it's his 512 ram thats holding him back. try going to ogrimar with that much ram and see what happens. you need 1 gig.

Go 1 gig, my friend with a sager 98xx upgrade from 512 to a 1 gig huge difference.

Should i go with the ram i lsited the link for, which was 1.8 v or should i go with a 4-4-4 latency ram?

i dont know about the dependabiliy of that company...gigaram...

Try the Corsair XMS series of memory, made for gaming, but expensive.

So i got the ram, installed it, and its great, last couple of questions tho...
Can i mix pc 3200 with pc 2700, cuz i have a 1 gig pc 3200 and 256 pc 2700, if not then oh well. But if i can will it be better to have the 3200 1 gig running at 400 mhz, or 1256 of ram running at 333mhz (assuming it automatically downgrades to teh lower speed). 2nd of all do i have to do something in teh bios for the ram to run at 400 mhz or doe sit do that by default?
just use the one gig at 400mhz . you're games will thank you . eh um games will run better. If you really want to get technical. Run 3dmark with and then with out the 256mb. That will tell you truly what is faster

Here's a question about ram: I have the 9880 with 1 gig. It's in 2 X 512 config. If I'd like to bump up to 2 gig, I'm kinda screwed in the sense that I have to buy 2, 1 gig sticks. If I would've went with 1 stick of 1 gig ram, all I'd have to do is add in 1 more stick for 2 gigs.

My question is, is it alright to say...add in a 1 gig stick and leave the other 512mb stick in there for a total of 1.5 gig of ram?

Reason I ask is, I never hear of anyone with a sort of oddball amount of memory like 1.5 gig. It's always an even 1, or 2 gigs...or 512mb, 256mb, ect.

Also, I thought I read somewhere that the pc's don't like when there are dissimilar amounts of memory sticks in the pc? That both sticks should be the same amount...

Any truth to that? Any problem with me just upgrading 1 stick since I really don't have the money for 2 one gig sticks?

The 9880 has 4 DIMM memory channels. You should be able to add another 2x512 for 2GB, a lone 1GB to 2GB, or another 2x1GB for 3GB total capacity. The problem with adding a lone stick is that you will lose the added speed that DUal Channel provides because that requires memory in both channels to work at maximum speed. I'd suggest getting another two 512MB sticks.

Thanx Omaha! I didn't realize that I had 4 slots. Thanx again for the info on the dual channel.

Think I'll grab 2 more 512's.
