A PC to Mac file transfer question

I've grown up on PC's my entire life, so I don't know much about macs

I'm assuming I can't transfer files directly from a mac to a pc? Like I can't hook both of them up to the same network and share files between the two?

Can a mac and a pc even share the same network?

How about those usb thumb drives. Say I typed something up in my mac's word then moved it to the thumb drive, then plugged the thumb drive into my pc. Would I be able to get and view the file on my pc's word?

I have a bunch of pc's and it'd be nice if I could move files between the mac and another pc easily. I'd also need them to be able to share the same network for internet.

Any info would be great.

u can hook them up via a router, or u could also connect them directly via an ethernet cable.

yes, it's what i do for smaller files. otherwise u use an external HD to move the big stuff.

what kind of internet? broadband? if broadband, a wireless router would serve u well.

Just to further reiterate what triadone said, you can move them using the network. However, you'll just have to enable Windows File Sharing, which is an easy practice that's outlined through Apple's support site. I recommend getting a router--I use a Netgear which works very nicely; plus, I was able to get discounts on it so that I actually made money...

If you do get the router, you can use your broadband with it.

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't bother to click Triadone's link... nicely done.

Or you could send them through bluetooth, right?

Also as a side note, make sure if you buy an external drive, make sure it is both windows and mac compatible.

Does that work on 10.4 as well, as it says 10.3.x at the top. Just curious, as I didnt know if it changes with 10.4

yes, the steps and interface are identical between the OS X versions.
