Unleaded's - MSI MS-1029 Review - Page 9

no, the abg card does not offer bluetooth, just hopefully won't inhibit the wireless signal when using bluetooth.

Awesome! Thanks for the quick response.

The MSI 635 really does well and sverely beats the centrino in the gaming scenario battery benchmark as well as DVD playback battery benchmark.

Though, in the office scenario, the centrino has better battery life.

Also the MSI M635 even wins some performance benchmarks even though running a slower clocked GPU and CPU. I'm looking in to getting this notebook with the MT-40 myself.

Wow take a look at the Far Cry and Doom 3 tests. I'm so not getting the MT-32.

Has anyone registered their laptop on msi's website. I went to do this but I am confused about where to find the part number for the laptop. Also is the product name simply msi-1029? Also I was wondering, did anyone MSI-1029 come with a remote. I know mine didn't but I was reading the article on tomshardware that features this system and it showed a remote. I just wanted to make sure one wasn't left out of my system. -Rob

My Laptop is a targa 826 mt-32 ( it is a rebranded msi megabook 635, with the ms-1029 motherboard) and it come with a remote

Rob,

The 1029 doesn't have the remote, only the 1010 does. Early documentation from MSI showed a remote, but upon release all that was removed. Not sure what is on tom's hardware.

your 1029 should have a serial number on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, i think it starts with MS1029. The model should be MS1029 or just 1029 on the website when registering.

CoffeeShark

I think the Megabook 635 that is sold in Taiwan actually does have a remote.

lord,

i think you're right, but the 1029 (barebones) version of the M635 doesn't come with it. Unless you get the M635 version, you won't receive a remote.

I have two questions relating to this computer hopefully someone can help me with. First of all is it necessary to run the System Control Monitor. Does it do anything besides allow you to change power settings? Also does anyone know where you would check for driver updates for the touchpad? Thanks, Rob
post #171 of 665
You don't need to run msi software. it is useless and hogs down the laptop.
The touchpad is made by elantech, one of the three makers of touchpads ( the others are alps and synaptics). elantech is the second best, or should I say the first worst. Synaptics makes the only good touchpad, and the elantech one is mediocre ( alps is even worst).
Elantech was supposed to provide driver updates for their touchpad line ( they have two products: the bad one: version 3 touchpad that comes with the msi notebook, and version 5 that is supplied on some packard bell laptops).

their site is at: http://www.elantech.com.tw/english/en_home.html

I sent them a mail a few weeks ago, because the driver was not online. I recived no response, and I noticed that they removed the driver page.

MSI site has driver version 3.0.2.0 for version 3 touchpad. The latest driver version for this touchpad is 3.0.2.2 and you can find it at targa site:

http://www.service.targa.co.uk/

browse for notebook targa traveller 826 mt-32. you will also find a newer driver for the onboard modem than the one provided by msi.

Do you know if the hot keys like the on and off for bluetooth or wireless will still work if I remove the msi software. That is my only concern about removing it. Also that is interesting about the touchpad. Overall I'd say its decent but it definitely does have some quirks that could be resolved. -Rob

I've ordered one of these with cyberpowerinc.com with the MT-40 proc. but they say I'll have to wait at least another week for them to get it in stock. Unleaded did a great review and answered most questions about the lappy. The wait will be hard. :P

I currently have an eMachines M5310 that has a Athlon XP-M 2400+ (1.79ghz), but it seems to LOVE running its fan off, which is annoyingly loud. I use Speedswitch to keep the CPU throttled down to 518 mhz and still the fan won't quit. Running it at full speed often causes it to overheat and shutdown. So now seems like a good time to give the brand-spanking new Turion a try.

Question for Unleaded (or other 1029 owners): when using the 1029 for basic Windows stuff (business apps, Internet browsing, light stuff of the sort), does the lappy keep the fan down or off?
The buttons (hot keys) will still work without the software.

the fan stays off most of the time when running apps.
Honestly I think the system is pretty quiet overall. For my normal usage which is internet, office apps, I really don't hear any audible noise at all. I'm not sure if the fan is on and quiet or if its not on at all. You can however feel some warm air from the right side. Not hot by any means, but I guess this must mean something is circulating air. -Rob

Just to make sure I am clear. Are the drivers listed under the MSI Megabook M635 the ones that should be used for the MSI 1029 barebone? It appears to be the same system. Also is it wise to install the MSI LiveUpdate (is this compatible with msi 1029?) program to do bios upgrades and stuff?
It is the same laptop. The MSI 635, the Targa Traveller 826 and the MSI Ms-1029 Barebone are the same.

I don't use liveupdate. I update bios using a bootdisk, and for the drivers, I source them from other places, because MSI doesn't provide the latest ones.

As the Live Update utility is bundled with a number of MSI's laptops but NOT the MS-1029, I would assume that is for a reason and would suggest against using it.

I would also steer clear of an M635 BIOS as there were changes to the system that arrived in the States (no remote for one). The current BIOS version for the MS-1029 is v2.40.

BTW, after extensive testing of BIOS v2.41 (the Beta from MSI) we actually discovered that is was recognizing 2GB (2 x 1GB DDR400) to be running at 400MHz. Unfortunately, the BIOS seems to be a bit raw and we did encounter some instabilities that relate to VGA. I will be discussing this with MSI first thing AM (PDT).

Do you have a link as to where to find the bios specifically for the msi - 1029? Also do you need a floppy to update the bios or can you use something else?
