Unleaded's - MSI MS-1029 Review - Page 10

Hi Unleaded,

Can you please tell me where to find bios version 2.40? I am using version 2.30 that is available for download from msi taiwan site.

Can you send me 2.41 so that I can try it?

if you can, my mail is finas@aeiou.pt

Thanks

I would also steer clear of an M635 BIOS as there were changes to the system that arrived in the States (no remote for one). The current BIOS version for the MS-1029 is v2.40.

BTW, after extensive testing of BIOS v2.41 (the Beta from MSI) we actually discovered that is was recognizing 2GB (2 x 1GB DDR400) to be running at 400MHz. Unfortunately, the BIOS seems to be a bit raw and we did encounter some instabilities that relate to VGA. I will be discussing this with MSI first thing AM (PDT).
But that is very good news! So atleast is possible to get 2GB to run at DDR400, now hopefully they can tweak the BIOS to make it stable and release an update. Besides what memory was used? Kingston, Supertalent or what is tested to work now?

Also what video driver should be used for Win32, the Mobility Catalyst 5.8 or the bundled MSI Video driver? Are there any differences Performance/Stability wise?

Fraid not, in fact I am awaiting MSI USA to get me the 2.40 BIOS from Taiwan's FTP for me to flash this system back from 2.41.

I'd be happy to link you once I have the release version.

Hmm, I'm sorry, I do believe that 2.3 was the original BIOS and the beta I flashed to was 2.41....I will confirm however.

Some CPU-Z screenies of memory frequencies using BIOS v2.41 with 2GB (2 x 1GB DDR400MHz Supertalent SODIMMs):

Note the BIOS version is 2.41

Memory frequency is 199Mhz (x2 for DDR)

Unleaded:

Do you have any DDR400 cas 2.5 1GB memory to test?

My problem is that I have one of those modules that is not recognised ( doesn't work alone).

Bios date is 31/8/2005!!! 9 days old!

Finas:

I'll have to check.

Shipping BIOS version is indeed v2.30 and I will link for d/l shortly.

Ok, BIOS version 2.30 can be downloaded here:

here

A few notes:

1. Flashing a BIOS can result in NEGATIVE outcomes. I cannot be held responsible for any issues encountered as a result of undertaking this procedure yourself.

2. By default, USB Legacy Support is disabled in the BIOS. You must first set this to auto, reboot back to BIOS and only then will you be able to select a USB floppy drive in the boot order.

3. The .rar file includes the BIOS flash utility, afudos.exe as well as the ROM file, A1029AMS.230.

4. Boot to a DOS prompt and type afudos /ia1029ams.230 /pbnc to flash (please note the space before /pbnc is required)

Hmm, I just reread your post, Finas. You wanted 2.41 and I'm afraid I cannot supply that as it is unstable.

Unleaded:

I really don't care about stability now, as at this moment I only want the bios for testing. I also wanted to test it to check if this new bios solves my problem. I would change it back to 2.30 after testing, if stability issues arrive.
I am an old school computer geek, and I am very used to updating bios. I take full responsability for whatever happens if you send me the 2.41 beta version.

I think he said in one of his earlier posts that he would be unable to distribute (on any scale) any BETA bios versions he is given. Probably a legal issue.

Unleaded: Great info! What about 2GB 2 x 1GB Kingston DDR400 w/ BIOS 2.41? I would be very interested in the timing results w/ CPU-Z.

I don't have any Kingston RAM on hand to perform those tests at the moment, sorry

I might get the beta bios as they are testing my system. I have some problems the power / battery so they're gonna try to load beta bios to see if its fixed. If not I getta new 1029 ^^

Any new info?

MSI has tested the v2.41 BIOS on 5 production systems and is satisfied that it has corrected the downclocking issue FOR APPROVED MEMORY. At this time the list of approved memory is small, consisting almost entirely of Supertalent modules. I have some more testing to do myself, however, I have already seen in my first flash of a 1029 that a pair of 1GB DDR400 Supertalent modules WERE recognized to be running at 400MHz.
yay for MSI, the fact that there was a fast response to a serious issue like this means big things if and when I decide to purchase a new laptop.

on a side note, does this downclocking issue affect the MSI 1013 as well, and if so does that model also have a fixed bios being developed?
Say Unleaded, since your in kahoots with MSI, could you get some remote controls and sell them to us in the US separately. That would be awesome. I can't believe they expect us to actualy get up to use our computers.

Hooga:

The downclocking DOES also affect the MS-1013 and there is an updated BIOS for this system as well (v3.60). As I have mentioned elsewhere the downclocking issue is correct at this time ONLY for memory modules on MSI's AVL (which is almost exclusively Supertalent).

Efree:

Haha, I don't think that will be possible.
