btacular, volume on the speakers isn't bad, better than some. It is of course a laptop so don't expect any depth of sound. I am a MSI reseller, so I got the system from me and it was a very pleasurable experience

kirby, I will take pictures of the next unit (I need better ones anyway)

I will rerun battery tests probably tomorrow night. Specs on this system:

MT-34
1GB DDR 400 (1 stick)
60GB 7200RPM HD

Which company do you work for?? Thanks

The MSI 1029 i orded for my niece is in and running battery test on it right now.

The first test running is with the sceen on its lowest setting and the wifi on and net browsing.

The one thing I found out is the 1 gig PC3200 SODIMM I put in will not post but the 256 PC3200 will. The only differents is the 256 is cas 3 and the 1 gig is cas 2.5. The system will post if both SODIMMs are in so when looking for SODIMMs for this notebook, make sure its Cas 3 and not cas 2.5 or cas 2.

I like the build on this notebook. its build solid and the screen is very nice with the gloss screen. This is very light for a 15.4" notebooks, feels like around 5 to 6 pounds. There is a warm spot under the right hand but not hot around 35C. The other warm spot is the bottom of the notebook around 38C so you using it as a laptop is ot a problem.

Ill post back with test numbers later. Ill do a DVD batter test and a battery test with the screen brightness all the way down ( I think its about 40%) with the wifi turned off.
Ill put up some 3Dmark numbers too.

The first battery test is done with the screen at lowest level around 40% and the wifi on browsing the net. I got 3 hours. The wifi is a intel 2915BG.

I don't believe that the System Control Manager setting for Optimal Battery Performance takes brightness to the floor. I don't have a unit in front of me at the moment, maybe you could check what it DOES lower it too.

I would say that 40% is virtually unusable, but I would bet that those 3+ hour results people have cited for other Turion based systems had settings as low as they could go whether it was usable or not.

Defaut is 3 but there is a setting button were you can change it to what you want so I set it to 0.

The 0 setting is very usable. I have no proble using the 0 setting with no problem reading for hours. The viewing angle goes down on 0 but thats not a problem for a single user,

Ok, so the tests I performed were not at 40% (which I'd gather from what you said is 0). I am assuming you did this through the slider (I did not).

I can see getting an additional 30 mins under such settings. Again, my tests were intended to be as "real world" as they could be and I can't imagine anyone using that lappy at 40% brightness unless they were in a pitch black room.

Nevertheless, I will wager that similar settings were used to achieve 3+ hours on the other Turion based systems as I mentioned above, so that puts the MS-1029 in the same ballpark.

When I finish the next build tonight I'll try out the "0" setting and see what it looks like.
The test in indoors but its on a desk next to the window with the blinds up. The 0 setting in this case is very usable. This screen being a gloss and a high end LCD might be why the 0 setting is usable.

True, it is very bright in part due to the glossy screen. I don't think I ever took it down to zero so I can't really say if it's usable or not. I'll be able to speak to that better tonight.

If, in your experience, it's bright enough to use, I don't think my impressions will be different.

I might have to rerun the battery test. I missed the setting for the ATI X700. In display properties advanced tab, there is a tab called PowerPlay. There you can set the the proformance of the core and mem speed when plugged in, high battery and low battery. When I did the test, the setting for battery was high perfomance on high battery and low battery had optimal battery life setting but that didn't kick in til the battery was 25% or lower. The optimal perfomance setting is core of 351 and mem of 297. In optimal battery lige setting the core is 145 and the mem is 158. If I have set the high battery to optimal battery life, I would see maybe another 20 to 30 mins.

Yes, I believe someone mentioned powerplay in the thread in general. That would most likely be responsible for the impressive battery rundown in the Ferrari (by way of example) as I would assume this would be set to the lowest core/memory clock.

I did nothing with PowerPlay during my rundown tests.

Here are the the 3DMark01se and 05 numbers.
The CPU is a Turion64 MT-32 1.8 gig 512 L2
1.25 gig PC3200 Cas3
80 gig Samsung 5400 RPM
X700 at 350 core and 300 mem

3DMark05 is 2297
3DMark01 SE 14537

Not much, if any, difference given the added RAM.

I found another thing to save power. The Intel wifi in properties has a setting to lower the power the wifi card uses. By doing this, you lower you range but is the hot spot is close by then its a way to up the battery life. The setting is set to defaut but no clue to what the defaut setting is. There are 6 power settings from lowest to highest listed. This setting is in the config button under the advanced tab called power management.

I'm installing OS after build so I will employ some of the power saving features you mentioned when performing my "validation" rundown test.

We'll also see if the benchmarks remain consistent configured with 1GB DDR400 and a 60GB 7200RPM HD (I would imagine they will be in line with my previous results).

Ok, I took the screen brightness all the way down and, you are correct, it is usable, however I would not personally like to work at this brightness level for an extended period.
a bit offtopic.. but to Unleaded, do you know if MSI is planning to release a 14" notebook in the near future?

I don't have any specific knowledge of a 14" laptop in the works but I can certainly make an inquiry and get back to you on that.

Update:

This MS-1029 configured with an MT-34, 1GB DDR 400 (1 stick) and a 60GB 7200RPM HD yielded a PCMark2005 score of 2726, pretty much on par with the test I ran earlier on an Asus Z70V. The Z70V was configured with a P-M 760, 512MB DDR2 533 (granted it's half the RAM) and an 80GB 5400RPM HD and received a PCMark2005 score of approx. 2900.

Just finished a battery test with screen all the way down, Video card all the way down and the WIFI off.
It lasted about 3.5 hours.

I put the notebook on scales and its about 6lb 2oz
