Unleaded's - MSI MS-1029 Review - Page 17

Well. I understand no laptop is without fault, but the Ram Problem is a major "Quirk" for me. Along with the wireless card being defected "or so I hear".
I overclocked my ms-1029 to 425.50 core, 375.50 mem with ATITool, with no artifacts. I haven't made any modification to the notebook.

I would like to know results of other overclocking experiments

btw, I'm using catalyst 5.10a

Quite a bit better than I did, Finas. I know you said you did nothing to the system, however, did you use anything other than the thermal pad provided with the heatsink/pipe?

Should I use my Arctic Ceramique once I receive the laptop? How is the stock thermal paste? Is it worth the trouble to substitute? The Ceramique made a big difference on my desktop system.

Unleaded:

Haven't touched the laptop in any way but I do have some artic silver 5 laying arround somewhere... tomorrow I'll replace the thermal pad with ac5 and test to see if I can get better results.

I suppose that it doesn't matter, but I used aTITool 0.25beta8.

by the way, here are my 3dmark scores with a MT-34:

Before oc(350/300):
3DMark 2003: 5566
3DMark 2005: 2435

After oc(425.25/378):
3DMark 2003: 6671
3DMark 2005: 2929

Some people had problems putting AS5 on their 1029's. I use Cooler Master stuff on mine and it yield pretty cool temps.

Has anyone tried using Bluetooth Headphones with thier 1029's and the MSI mini-pci card. I would like to know if it uses the toshiba bluetooth stack so I could get the Toshiba Bluetooth Headphones.

I think we're getting some lesser quality stuff here in Poland
- the only config I could get was (see sig). I checked, the HDD is 4200 RPM
- I can't get past 4700 in 3dmark03 on stock settings - that's low!
- I tried to o/c the x700, the core goes ok (412 stable, haven't tried higher) but when I raise the memory clock over 300, it immediately starts artifacting on the desktop. 320 screws up the whole screen.

Any guesses what's wrong?

Pan_Kara:
About the 3dmark score: I managed 5566 and you 4700. The only notable diference I see is the cpu. Mine is an MT-34. I used Catalyst 5.10a. Have you tried these? or did you use the ones that came with the laptop? Did you have the laptop plugged to the mains? Running on batteries affects performance.

About the overclock: did you use aTITool 0.25Beta8 ? I had some problems with artifacts, when I would use a certain combination of core speed and memory, it would give me artifacts, for instance: 390 core 370 mem (I'm making this up, I don't remember the values) would give me artifacts, but 425.25 378 would be ok.
i suspect that the core and memory speeds are related to each other by a multiplier of some kind. And I belive that ATITool does not respect this, hence, when you try some mix of speed/core speeds, you will get artifacts, even if you are not overclocking: try downclocking it and see!

I would do as follows: without touching the core speed, I would try to get the memory as high as you can. Then , I would reset the ram speed, and try to up the core speed until it shows artifacts. After that, you know more or less the limits of the hardware and can try the best combination of core/mem speeds.

Also, When you start to overclock, it is better to let the laptop run for a while in 3dmode to allow it to heat up. This will make the fans run at full speed. If you try to overclock as soon as windows boots, you may see artifacts, because the fans did not kick in yet, and the graphics chip is overheating...

Weird, the fans kick in right when i start to play a game or overclock, this is even from coldboot. But I gotten pretty high with core and mem. I'll get the exact numbers later.

i'm looking to replace the stock thermal pads with either arctic silver or the cooler master stuff...which is better and how much did your temps go down?
thanks,
scott

mystik: what do you have?
I could only get a 330 mem oc, i guess some people got better quality stuff.
I think Scoot1212 is wondering what I am... What is that program you are running Mystik?
that's the program he's using...dashboard...i'm curious what thermal paste if any other than the stock.

Scoot1212:

Well, I was going to replace the thermal compound that came with my laptop, but it is so glued together that I decided to let it stay like it is...

I would defenetly go for the artic silver 5. I gets the best scores all over the web, so I should be a easy decision.

The cpu shouldn't matter that much. I think I'm currently on 5.10 Cat-s (downloaded them on friday I think), but that souldn't make that much of a difference anyway - I had similar scores with stock drivers.

It seems this was it!
Maybe because I'm indervolting the CPU, I don't know, but today I tried to make the fan spin faster by running 3d mode, then I was able to reach a more or less stable 330-340. I got 5300 or something like that with core on stock 350 and memory on 340. Still low.
Funny thing is that in 3dmark05 I get 2222 - that's more or less what other people are getting.

Thanks a lot for the help, anyway!

i have several questions about this notebook... if these questions have already been answered i apologize

how bad is the heat emitted from the right side of this notebook if you use a mouse?? it was mentioned in the review, but how bad is it after 2 hours of gaming for example??

also, is this notebook very loud in regard to fan noise and DVD drive noise??

is the sound chip in this notebook capable of hi-def sound like the intel 915 chipset??

Thanks
