I should also point out, and this might well impress me more than almost anything else about this particular laptop...during stress testing such as 3D/PCMark bencharks, it remains utterly cool on both palmrests and throughout the keyboard surface.

Interesting...

On this unit I received a 3DMark2001 score of 15591.

The only think I've done differently on this unit (save for, of course the config) is set the System Control Manager to "High Performance" vs. "Full Performance"

3DMark2003 and 2005 to come.

Another interesting find. Though not listed as a manufacturer for which ATI provides support (other systems will tell you to get an update from the manufacturer if it's not compatible), the MS-1029 is happy to take the new Mobility Catalyst 5.8 drivers for XP. Let's see if they perform any better.

IGNORE THE ABOVE

Don't install Mobility Catalyst 5.8 drives as, though they will pass the "test" for the systems for which it is compatible, performance actually suffers and the Control Center does not work properly.

Does the msi support dual monitors?
Thanks Chris.

I have the msi wireless g/bluetooth card and find I have horrible signal strenth. Even with it a few feet from the router I have very low signal. I was wondering if there is possibly a setting I am missing somewhere to boost the signal strenth. Thanks, Rob

Rob,

check the antenna on the wireless card, make sure they are connected securely. If you have both wireless and bluetooth on at the same time, is it worse than with just wireless on?

Awesome review Unleaded!!

Is the sound from the speakers loud enough to be heard like 8 feet away from the notebook?

Is there anyway you can take pictures of the screen with gaming content on it?

Thanks

http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/ Hey Unlead can you see if the bios will support boot skin ? I wanna change the boot image and i was wondering if MSI does that.

Is there any way to plug in a mouse or keyboard into this laptop and is there a port replicator or anything like that out for it?

We expect that the MSI MS-1029 will handle the latest games with ease at a minimum of medium settings.

As we felt that the stock clocks of the GPU left a degree of headroom, we did explore the thresholds of these clocks through gradual overclocking and testing for stability. Only stock cooling was used apart from our substitution of the thermal pad included on the GPU heat sink with Artic Silver thermal compound. We achieved our best stable overclock (All benchmarks completed successfully with no artifacts or tearing) at a 400MHz core and 345MHz memory clock.

update: did some tests with windows xp64 and the 1029.

stock 350/300:

OC 408/340 (stable, no artifacts, not really maxed out)

by the way, the Bluetooth/Wireless card is not working with the 64bit drivers. i think MSI has some problems with the drivers on this card in general.

CoffeeShark: What video drivers are you using for Windows XP 64bit and how did you install them? Did you used the 64-bit drivers supplied from MSI? Very nice scores I must add! I'm concidering getting this system w/ Windows XP 64-bit installed.
ram,

i used the msi links from their 1029 page for all the 64-bit drivers, they all worked well except the bluetooth/wireless driver.

The drivers are all packaged in a RAR file, after extracting most have their own executable for installation, which is nice, just like having a driver disk. I downloaded them, threw them on a USB stick and extracted to a local folder on the 1029.

64-bit install of windows was easy, no worries.

i used atitool for adjusting graphics, 64-bit windows will recognize 32-bit software and put it in the correct directory to run as 32bit.

Emotion,

Those are actually the drivers I downloaded and installed previously. I d/l'ed again and re-installed and it did install cleanly, however, I received worse benchmark scores than with the MSI provided drivers. Given that MSI presumably modifies the drivers to optimize them for their system, these findings don't really surprise me.

How's the keyboard? It seems to be the only negative thing I've heard about this laptop... that it's noisy and not very comfortable?

Hey everyone, great review on the MSI 1029! I've been looking for a turion based laptop in the $1500 range, and this looks like a winner. Two questions for someone to answer:
1) Where is the best place to order one of these? So far I have found two online retailers and I have never heard of either one... XMELD.COM and CYBERPOWERSYSTEM.COM. I think someone else mentioned Xmeld? Either of these companies reputable or other suggestions?
2) Also, when I'm choosing an operating system, (considering it is the same price on XMELD) should I go XP Pro or XP Pro 64? I have heard some problems with driver compatibility? Otherwise, since MSI offers a driver pack, will XPPro64 emulate 32bit without a problem? I'll be running basic office apps, and maybe some video editing or photoshop.

Thanks!

I plan to order a MT34 1.8Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 100GB HD, and a wireless card...

Oh and can someone post some pics? At least of the sides and the rear panel? Just want to get an idea of the layout! thanks
post #59 of 665
Yeah I'd appreciate pics too.

Also, does anyone know about those light-passable badges. I want one that has the Mac symbol in it ^^
