Unleaded's - MSI MS-1029 Review - Page 29

This thread shall never die!!! lol...

Anyway I just thought I should share this. I had previously been using XP Pro x64 Edition with my MS-1029 and it ran well. However, I recently reformatted and installed XP Pro 32-bit, just to see if there were any performance issues.

Well.

Aside from completely eliminating the driver headaches of x64 Edition, along with the latest Omega drivers (2.6.87) I managed to boost my x700 core clock to a stable 425MHz and memory to a stable 380MHz. Consequently, this got my 3DMark05 scores into the 2700 range.

Bottom line: I'd stay away from x64 Edition for now. If 64-bit Omega drivers are released and Ricoh gets around to finally releasing some 64-bit card reader drivers, I may switch back. But for now, I'm happy with 32-bit XP.

How did you Order the heatsink?

Lord Savant. I'm having the same problems. I replaced the pads with Arctic Silver. I even used the cleaner that Arctic Silver makes to make sure I got all the previous stuff off. Looking at the heatsink assembly the part that goes over the GPU isn't even flat so I'm afraid to tighten it down further. I used a thick amount of Arctic Silver for that part to fill the gaps on the rough surface.

I also ran some Diagnostic Software packaged with Nortown SystemWorks and the GPU seems ok. There also were no artifacts when running the ATI Tools test, but I'm not going to put the GPU under anymore stress by playing any games until I fix my heat problem.

The CPU runs to 80 degrees Celsius with Prime95 stress test. there were no errors after about 5 hours though. I'd, however, like to get the temps lower under load.

I think I may need to order a new heatsink myself. Could you please tell me where you got the part number and other details about how to order the part? Thanks.

How does this laptop play the games? Because 2100-2200 benchmarking doesn't really convince me. Is this notebook stable enough to last a while?

And how trustable is MSI's support on their laptops? I heard some warranty issues with MSI. Is their customer service good?

Well, you are not going to be playing Doom 3 at 1600*1200... 800*600 gives a very good playability ( same with Farcry etc ). So it can run the latest generation games without to much problems. And to be honest, running games at higher settings then 1024 makes it kinda hard to read text in games that don't scale ( deux ex 1 etc ).

Its perfectly stable if you know what you are doing I quickly formatted the system & reinstalled it with the pure essentials, and none of that free crap programs that every vendor installs on them. Stable like the gold exchange.

Install SP2... As far as i can remember, with XP SP2, USB is supported out of the box.

You can find drivers also here: http://www.service.targa.co.uk/ ( left dropdownbox -> Mobiel PC's, then the Targa 29T ( 4th of 5th down ). Thats the MSI-1029 but just rebranded ).

I wont install SP2 or even get near an "update" to windows for my own reasons. It appears that Targa doesnt have the driver. I have working usb hubs but only with Microsoft's universal 1.1 driver. do you know what the hardware is called maybe I can find the driver on DriverGuide... The idea of transfering music at those speeds kills me
Thx

Well ... refusing to install SP2 is not a workable excuse. But you are leaving your laptop open for a few hundred bugs, and that is NOT acceptable. If you are afraid because you are running a illegal copy of windows, don't worry, SP2 only cripples a few generalized keys, there are dozen of key generators out on the web ( of course i don't condone the illegal use of windows ).

its not about the ability to install SP2, but the affect... those "updates" slow the computer down to trick the inexpirienced into thinking they need a newer faster computer... oh and also the secruity manager is VERY annoying... i'm still running an XP SP1 install on a different comp. for 8 months, no updates, no windows firewall, just Panda AV and a bunch of freeware anti-spyware/adware programs. still runs fast too(for what it is anway). I dont use IE,or outlook. <-----off topic/on topic----> Thanks for trying to help me,but I still dont have my driver why dont they inclued these things, USB is only the most used port on the comp. and this lappy's lack of legacy ports doesnt help, on the other hand my mouse works

will an SP2 driver work on Sp1?
wow, big windows hater, maybe you should try linux or OSX, about the USB, seems silly but i would just email where ever you bought it from, that would prolly be the best.

Daim m8. You really tell a bunch of BS. I've been doing this for 14 years already, and i have yet to see a deliberate plan by MS to slow down the old OS using service packs. Sure, they drop support for OS's after a while, but deliberately crippling using Service Packs, lol ... i wish i knew what you have been smoking, because it must be some powerful stuff.

SP2 = SERVICE PACK 2. Its a collection of security fixes, some driver updates, and the Security Manager. Nothing else. SP2 has maybe a 0.1fps difference in any of your games. Check some reviews of SP2, there have been a dozen tests by now. And the difference in speed is at best 1%. Not exactly a way to trick people into buying faster computers. SP2 is actually a little faster in some situations, and in some SP1 is a little faster.

http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-237-1.htm

Performance is for the most part identical to SP1, except in a few cases. In those cases, SP2 was actually faster! There were only one or two instances where SP1 was faster, and that was by the slimmest of margins.

Whoeps ...

Also, if you know so much about MS there evil plans, you need to know by now that the security center has a little link to the left side: "Change the way Security Center notifies me" where you can disable that annoying popup.

LOL!

Prior to SP2 I had all sorts of problems with USB on XP and now that I'm on SP2 I have no problems at all . . . You don't sound inexperienced so why worry? When I installed this laptop the first thing I did was install XP and SP2 and I'm quite happy with the performance.
Why would microsoft want to trick people into buying faster computers anyways? Last time I checked they don't make any computer hardware at all so I can't really see what they would get out of it. Maybe Billy Gates would just think it's a laugh or something.
i guess i'll install sp2 on an older comp. to see the new "features". I have updated other computers before, but it slowed down so much i had to reformat.
I still wont put SP2 on my MSI , i just filled my 120gb drive. I know someone will say just install an update insted of reformating, but i have heared several horror stories about the update. SP3 is due out soon anyway hello DRM

i wish i set up my pc with 2 partitions

I have seen builds dateing back to '03, it will most probably be out by August.
Don't expect me to use it though lol, install alone will be 5+gigs

i guess i'll have to swith to Sp2... Sp1 wouldn't use the correct drivers to my creative zen micro... *backs up windows registry, and begins "update"* gasp
