Unleaded's - MSI MS-1029 Review - Page 33

wow thanks for the update, though MSI doesnt say what the update is for
post #642 of 665
Well, it didn't solve my problem! I'm still unable to boot with a ADATA ddr400 cl2 1gb memory module
post #643 of 665
that's strange then what is this update for?
in the bios update, are then any changes to the settings because the stock version bios that i have right now has very little settings
post #645 of 665
No new settings. The only visible change is the build date (2-17-2006) and the EC version reporting that changed from EC version 5.0 to EC version 5.1

EC, I belive, stands for embebed controler. Haven't tried to see if it fixes the powerplay issue with the non msi ati drivers.
thanks for the info. if you notice any changes such as the powerplay issue with the ati drivers please post. thanks again

How are you guys installing the BIOS updates?...there's no floppy drive and when I have burned the files to CD it doesn't do anything.

"...as evidenced by MSI's visual bar thing"

you have on screen displays for volume and caps lock and that?...

...my temps are quite high...casual use, web and that Im between 52c and 55c..after about 30mins of WoW Im around 78c or so...I've even quite the game and for a breif second saw the taskbar say 82c before it started lowering. This is way too high...and now that summers here that much heat blowing on my mouse hand (great exhaust location btw) is making me sweat just trying to play WoW while watching TV. I have a 5400rpm HDD and a Turion MT-37....so nothing thats incredibly hot..and I used AS5. Even so the laptop exhaust shouldn't feel like a hair dryer, non-exageration.
78 is quite high, i only reach 71-74 at the highest, i got the MT-40, HDD temps are normal also didn't use the AS5

My power switch has broken off for the second time and fallen inside. First time I shipped it off. Wanna fix it myself this time. How hard is it to take one of these things apart and how do you do it? Nothing seems to want to budge if I take all the screws out of the back. Does the flimsy front bezel just pop off?
So for the most part I think the AS5 has managed to settle and my running temps have calmed down. I noticed that I do sometimes hit the very corner of the touchpad with the corner of my hand when typing, though that still doesn't explain the few times where it did things completely unattended. I installed Dapper Drake yesterday just for fun, and I was playing with that (trying to get Xgl to run for kicks) but the very last straw came today when I got up and went to get back on. I noticed a small piece of plastic fall gently to the table...one of the lid clips. The one on the right, in fact, the one it looks like informs the laptop that the lid is, in fact, closed.

If only this could've happened within 14 days of the purchase >.<
post #651 of 665
hmmm how can a lid clip fall? wow gotta be careful there

This might be a stoopid question but you guys that are experiencing high temps at idle/low activity, are you using the PowerNow! features of the CPU to lower the clock speed when doing non-intensive tasks?

My fan was blowing a lot and the box was very warm until I realized that somehow I'd lost the settings that enable PowerNow.

I've reenabled it and now, after about 30 minutes of web surfing, etc (no gaming) the CPU sits at 36% and the temps bounce between 50-51C (I'm using the AMD PowerNow! dashboard to figure this stuff out).

If you're already doing this then disregard.

I am actualy *not* using, but my temps are usualy 43c (from speedfan). This after about 45 minutes playing a DVD. I do need to monitor my temps when playing games.

Seems like I am getting acceptable temps so far.
you certainly got some good temps there, i wonder what cpu you got, i always get around 50C while playing DVDs
post #655 of 665
My CPU have reached temperatures as high as 87C while playing games. I think this is to high and is a design flaw of this notebook on MSIs part. Other than that and driver support and some small issues I'm satisfied with this notebook and the performance / dollar spent i gives me but for future notebooks I will look elsewhere than MSI. Maybe ASUS.

I have a MT-37. The notebook was resting on a desktop, so this was not with a cooling mat (or whatever you call those things).
sorry I didn'd read all pages but my question is does this laptop or the 1039 support mobile A64? Or only Turions? I ask because I have a mobile 3700+ laying around...
neit_jnf, Turion MT only
yeah - I'd also like to know how to do a bios update on this thing - I'm still using 2.3.
