Axim X50 and GPS Question

Thread Starter
I'm looking to get the Axim X50 for my first PDA. I mainly want it to use as a portable GPS, mainly for moving from car to car.

Does anyone use the X50 for GPS, if so, what type of GPS receiver and mapping software do you use? I was looking into the CF GPS, but was wondering how well it worked.

Thanks for any input.

I have the Axim 50v and a bluetooth fortuna clip on gps with microsoft steets and it works great. I also have a flight mapping program that also works good. The fortuna came with a auto plug that also charges the Axim while using it. I got the gps from http://www.expansys.com.hk/product.asp?code=113491

the dell gps is the one to go with, it is bluetooth and includes a dash mount and car charges, runs a little over $200 , propriatary software. the pharos version is cheaper, but dosent work as well, not as convenient , and includes less.

well if ur dash is metal or anywhere is metal in car interior definitely go with the Garmin GPS 10 it uses bluetooth and is a much better unit, Garmin is a known company that specializes in GPS unlike Dell and for around 200 its still the one to go with and for sam price no question better unit just depends if ur dash or somewhere around it has metal cause it doesnt come with mount but is magnetic and in my car my dash is painted metal near windshield so it is perfect and strong magnet too! it also comes with piece of good velcro but obviously not better than magnet or mount
But garmin is one of the best GPS companies and for same price getting Dell brand is crazy unless you dont have bluetooth
here is one site to get it from

I went with a Globalsat BT-338 which uses the excellent Sirfstar III chipset - it's a small bluetooth receiver with great batterylife. Being bluetooth it means it can work with other devices making it a better investment.

For software I chose Tomtom, although not perfect it seemed the best of the lost and so far I've been very pleased with it.

This is the review I wrote on the setup:

Most GPS receivers (mouse type, CF type and certain bluetooth type) are matured products and will work fine with Axim X50v, even older generation ones GPS. All GPS map software are in their beta stage, with some slightly better than others, but do not hope too much and rely on it. None of the map software are satisfactory at this stage, but acceptable as an aid to GPS guiding.
