linux like desktop icons

alright.

the only thing i want from the linux OS is the way drives/cdroms pop up on the desktop after inserted.

like when you insert a thumb drive, an icon automatically pops up on the desktop

windows does not do this, can i make it do it? i dont want it to open a folder everytime i insert my drive, i just want an icon on the desktop when i insert it.

i also have an external HD that when turned off, id like no icon, or an icon with an "off" indication. and then when i turn the HD on, i would like a normal HD icon.

can this be done in windows xp
???????

When the drive is connected, and there is media inside (in the case of a disc drive or something like that) simply make a shortcut.

right but when the drive is disconnected. the shortcut remains on the desktop, and the icon doesnt even change to a "non-availible" drive icon..

ya know?

it depends how you have set it up. I used to use a script for auto mounting removable devices and when you disconnected the drive the icon would go away

You'll probably have to look into something from Stardock or the likes... there's not really going to be any way for you to do this using Windows natively. It works in Linux because its built that way, the same goes for OSX.

Google is your greatest friend.

OS X seems to just incorporate so many nice things.

damn XP (:

OS X does not have so many nice things, just a handful. id take shitty XP any day over osX.

I like a few thing in Mac OS X, but I wouldn't give up XP for it. XP is a lot better than MS previous OSes, and about the same as 2000. I find XP rock solid, only needing a reboot maybe once a week. Put my system in standby 100% of its "off" time.

I think Microsoft did a good thing with XP. Stable and offers several features which most people need (builtin USB key support, photo viewer, ZIP support, etc). It basically has the best features of Windows 2000 Pro, with some extra utilities which increase its usefulness.
