Inspiron 700m modular battery on ebay!!!

Hey guys, I just bought a 700m and have been lurking around these forums. I looked on ebay after hearing all about how you cant put a battery in the modular bay on the 700m. I found this! http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Dell-Inspiro...QQcmdZViewItem
I sent the seller an email asking him to verify that it is compatable. Can anyone add any more information to this?

edit: ive further researched this, and it seems like this seller must be wrong..... and i was so happy for a good minute there...

edit 2: seller just responded to my email. He says its an error in his auction, and isnt compatable. false alarm.

Yea, this wouldn't work. I checked out my 700m's compartment compared to my gf's d610's and the 700m lacks the battery connector next to the optical interface.

It's too bad the 700m can't accept a modular/drive bay battery - that would make the machine so much better!

I'm sorry to hear that. It's hard to get things for a Dell notebook in aftermarket.

The 700m does have an aftermarket extended battery. Would be neat if you had the ext. batt + modular on such a small machine!!!

^^i guess technically it is a modular bay, as it does not require removing screws or anything else to remove the drive from the bay; however, the drive is the only module that works in the bay.

mich43L, how is it not modular? It totally is modular. You flip a little lever, drive comes right out. You can swap it for a different drive, and i heard, but cant verify that you can swap it out for a floppy drive...

^That's called a fixed drive not modular. You can only* "swap" it for another optical drive. In order to be called modular it typically has to have two things:
- be swapped for a different type of drive (floppy, hd, battery)
- be hottswappable

*The 9300/xps2 guys are in the same boat as the 700m crowd but they found a third-party enclosure that houses a secondary hard drive inside the bay

^^You tell yourselves that. It costs $ to design for secondary battery and addidional devices so I'd say since Dell raked in your money due to that awesome deal you got (due to design cut backs), that someone at dell is pretty damn smart. You're being extremely naive if you think they didn't think about it.

rather than argue, lets try and be more productive: Does anyone have any method for getting the specs of that bay? What contacts exist in the bay and what can they support? Are there contacts in there that "could" allow the machine to draw power? "Could" a hard drive be attached?

Are you kidding? DELL DIDNT THINK! The computer already has what look like a bay capable of accepting a battery. Had they made a battery for it, they would have sold MORE 700m's AND would have sold an extra battery to go with it to many people. THINK ABOUT IT! Its like theyre already half way there so why not finish? If the bay wasnt swapable the way it is, then you would be right because it would cost money to design a modular bay. But this already is!

It isn't a modular bay, dell say it themselves. It would be great for a ~ultraportable like the 700m, but they didn't. If it had a modular battery, you could probably get the same life out of the 4cell+modular as out of the 8cell.

I know, I love my modular battery is great! I get 6-7hrs with both primary and modular

You guys arent making sense. So if dell came out with a battery tomorrow that fit in the bay, then all of a sudden it would be modular? Ok, lets say dell came out with a floppy drive that fits in the bay (i hear they have that unofficially) - then is it modular? I know someone posted pictures on these forums of a travel lite insert FOR the 700m and no one knows where to find it. Seems to me like that prooves that the 700m has a (half assed) modular bay.

it is a modular bay. just because there aren't other modules to go into it, other than other optical drives, it still is a modular bay. why, because you can use other optical drives, hotspot those drives, etc, etc, etc, since the drive is not fixed. you would think that since dell made the bay so the drive is removable (i.e. hotswapable), they would have made other modules for the bay. thus far, they have not, but it does not belay the fact the bay is modular.
