Ultraportable with better screen resolution?

Thread Starter
I was looking for an ultraportable laptop that has a screen resolution higher than 1024x768. It will be replacing my Dell Latitude D600 (1.6Ghz P-M, 1GB, 14.1" SXGA) which I use to program. The thinner, lighter, cheaper, the better. Price range is under $2000. Student discounts would be nice if possible.

Asus W5A looked nice, but something lighter would be better.

The HP 6230 which I use here at the office is 14.1" SXGA and I believe it weighs in at about 4.8lbs. Should have no prob getting it for under $2000.

Edit: Woops, you said ultraportable so this may well not qualify

Something in the 12" range would be ideal for me. My current laptop is already 14.1" and I'd like something smaller. Thanks for the reply!

I simply can't see there being a 12" laptop with a greater than XGA resolution, but I'll poke about and see if I can turn up anything.

The Dell 700m is 12.1" screen with a native resolution of 1280x800 (widescreen) and is pretty cheap if you wait for the right coupons

True, you could go the WXGA route, I hadn't really thought of that as HIGHER resolution as it is simply wide aspect XGA, but it will provide you with more total pixels.

I'll definately take a look at the Dell 700m. Something lighter would be nice too. Anyone know if there's a way to get student discounts off of an Asus laptops? Thanks again!

No, but you can get a W5A for around $1550. Seriously, you want higher than XGA on a 12" screen? The madness!

1. 12" dell latitude x1 (very light and thin, based on 1.1GHz ULV processors, so some compromise in performance)
1268x280

2. 12" Acer TravelMate 3000 series (3001 - 3004). 1280x800. Very well priced in the US, light, and no compromise in performance as you can have up to 2.0GHz pentimum m chips and the sonoma platform inside.

Not too much higher. WXGA would be about perfect for me. The extra bit of width would allow me to not to auto-hide all the panels in Visual Studio.NET while coding.

The Dell X1 seems to be just about perfect too. Although compiling is processor and hard drive intensive, I'll be alright as long as it can run fairly smoothly. Portability is important to me as I carry my laptop all over campus.

Wow, that Acer looked impressive. That's one that I completely overlooked. Thanks for pointing this one out for me, ivar!

The Sony S series is WXGA. The Toshiba M series are 12 inch SXGA and I believe Fujitsu have a 1q2 inch SXGA.

I knew you will appreciate it.

I seem to have the same priorities as you, so I found it. You are lucky that it is so cheao in the US.
Here it costs 1600 Euro or 100 Euro less in Austria. It may not look so chic as X1 (and Samsung Q30)
but it is almost perfect solution otherwise. Read more in a recent review posted in Acer section here and on

The X1 is probably the lightest 12" you can find right now. And it's reasonably priced too.

Wow that Acer looks nice - I didn't know it existed either. I wonder how their service is though. Even though there are a lot of horror stories with dell, I still trust their warranty. They seem large enough to be willing to replace broken parts, plus complete care is priced so well compared to most other manufacturers.

I'm definately interested in the Acer now. Anyone have experience with keyboard and build quality of the laptop? My Dell D600 laptop has a decent keyboard, and I love the keyboard on IBM Thinkpads. Any information on recommended places to purchase from would also be great! I saw newegg.com (great service!) had it for $1299 or so. If anyone knows if there's a place I can walk into and check it out, that would be awesome too.

Thanks again!

I tried the keyboard in the shop and I didn't notice anything bad about it. Just not as great as the one of powerbook which I can't forget.

It is better to ask ivanilia on this forum who actually bought TM3004 recently.
