Hey guys I am a real newbie when it comes to buying laptops. I want to get a laptop that will be top of the line enough so that I can play virtually any games on it. Top choices for me right now are the fully loaded Alienware or the new Sager 8790 I belive that is coming out soon. I just want to know, why you guys are deciding to go with Alienware instead of Sagers. I am curious. Are the performances between both the monster machines the same? Because these are uber laptops I just want to be sure that my money goes with the best machine. Thats all. I am not trying to start a flame war or anything I just want to make an educated buy. Thanks guys.

If you want the most the most bang for your buck go Sager they are less expensive and will out perform an Alienware. Here is a thread comparing the sager 5680 and the AW lappy.

your not an extreme noob. everyones gotta learn at one point. its not like they were born with the knowledge...well maybe myrkat was but i wont go there.. anyway a fully stocked alienware will deffinatly be a good choice. and then the sager 8790 which is supposed to be release in january 04 is going to be a beast also considering all of the new technology that is comming with it. here is the link to the specs of the 8790 which are impressive and i do have to say i don't know to much about the alienware specs available which reminds me i should drop by there site to take a gander but anyway...i do hope u have a big wallet cause you get what you pay for
i myself am getting a laptop soon (hopefully 8790 if there is no major delays in the making of it) and its gonna be very expensive so thankfully i don't have to pay bills or anything like that
ok anyway. alienware does make great laptops and so does sager so either one you choose you won't be dissapointed with it im sure. ok enough of my rambling good luck in your choice and be sure to tell us how it all turns out!

the 8790 will have a 17" screen so the look of the laptop will deffinatly change so it should be intresting to see what it looks like.
also i don't really care if it looks like a ugly beast as long as the ugly beast can do what i want it to do im very happy

When I'm getting my laptop, im probably going to buy the Hypersonic one with the AMD 64 chip. My customization comes around 2789 dollars, but this thing will last you a long time if you are gaming and using it for school. If you don't have that big of a budget, go for that one. This is just my opinion, I myself am an AMD fan, if Sager carried AMD, I would get it.

I am a noob when it comes to buying machines. I have not bought my own yet since I am a student and my parents pay for school. I am just interested in having the best bang for the money I am going to be spending. Thanks for all your replies. I guess the most sensible thing is to wait for the new Sager and take a gander at what it looks like and what kind of performance it is going to be packing. I read the review of the Athlon 64 for the laptop and even though a lot of the kinks have not been worked out as reported by anandtech.com it still rocks. It has 3 hrs of battery life doing regular stuff on the laptop. Also its the athlon 64...nuff said.

Hello,
Just to let you know, the Hypersonic and Sager notebook is basically the same thing. They're probably great notebooks, but one thing I found is that the Upgradeable GPUs are NOT SO UPGRADEABLE. It states on Hypersonic's website in SMALL PRINT, it may require professional installation, which means owners will have to send it back to them unless they want to VOID their Warranty. Plus the benchmark did not show the true power of the Area-51m with the ATI card and latest drivers.

Thats because like most all notebooks the GPU is soldered to the main board in the Sagers/Clevo systems. Therefore you have to hope and pray that Clevo developes an entirely new main board just for your new GPU.
To add to that, when you buy a notebook there are two expensive components surrounded by some cheaper plastic, the screen, and the mobo. That being said, you would be looking at $1k + system board replacement to get your new GPU., dropping 1k into an already aging notebook is dumb in anybodys book.
No as for AW, companies like ATI and Nvidia design the new cards on their nickle, then Uniwill adapts that technology to a cheap edge connector and you sanp a new GPU in, currently you can switch out from the Nvidia to ATI for around $275, and some DIY time to install it. So 275 for a new GPU, or 1k for a new mobo with an integrated GPU .
