Toshiba A4-S211 Owners w/ATIX600 favor requested

If I could have any users that use the onboard sound do a favor for me it would be appredciated.

Presently my ATIX600 and my Sound Max driver currently share IRQ 11. I called tech support and both people I talked to had ATI600 on IRQ 10. I did a complete system recorvery and still have this issue.

FAVOR: If you own a A4 with X600 could you please go to control panel>system>hardwaretab>devicemanager then select view resource by connection and look at IRQ and report to me what your sound card IRQ (on-board) and ATIX600 are (IRQ) are using that would be helpful and whether or not you can play unreal 2004.

I did a small test where I disabled the audio (on board via control panel) and sure enough it worked with no glitches.

Thanks

PS< I also bought a SB Audigy 2 card last night, did NOT help at all as the PCMCIA card also SHARES 11 with the GPU, turn off the audio, and Unreal (example) 2004, loads in 5 seconds, and plays fluid, turn ON the audio and UNREAL 2004 takes over 2 minutes to load and stutters all over the place.

The reason this is important is due to the UNREAL 2004 being a good benchmark to how it can handle audio applications.

Your help in solving this issue is impera tive. Also, I use a wireless Mouse (MSFT) and 1 SONY 1 GB stick. WHich are also on 11 and of course, I tried disabling EVERYTHING on 11 including Audio/Video and it still placed them on 11 after re-booting.

thanks

UPDATE: Dropped it off at the local Toshiba Service center, should have an anwser in the next few days.

I don't know about your model but generally with ACPI enable systems, windows xp shares IRQ with a number of devices. Since you already dropped it off at the service center, I would have advice to play around with BIOS settings.

OK, well I got it back, problem not fixed, there idea of tech support? (they took my HD and put it on another computer and confirmed (example) that Unreal 2004 would stutter and stall on other machine, when I asked what IRQ it had, they said same, both on 11! Can you believe it?!?!?!? Gessssssssssh.

Anway, this is what I'm starting to wonder, Toshiba is clueless about IRQ or windows registry editor.....

If I load a game, unreal 2004, it takes 2+ minutes to load, and then is very choopy, stuttering.....Toshiba confirms there laptops are IRQ 10 for video, 11 for audio. However, if audio is disabled, the game runs fine, smooth and loads in 10 seconds. vs 120-150 seconds with sound and choppy at that.

I disabled everything on 11, including sound card and ati, including un-install, still re-installs on 11 I did a factory re-install x 2, meaning you hold "0" (zero) and press power on and it reloads windows erasing everything you had on the HD from a hidden partition. I asked toshiba if this really overwrites everything, they said yes, I am doubtful that they know what they are talking about! Why? Becuase although it does remove any programs, it only takes about 10 minutes to completely re-install and I find it hard to believe installing windows XP Pro on a 4200 HD from a 4200 hidden partition would take just 10 minutes.

Using registry crawler, last night I found that I have 4 monitors installed, so I tried deleting a few of them, still on 11. Using registry crawler, I also noticed ATIx600 in quite a few places, like 29 to be exact. So am unclear as to which to uninstall.

If you go to control panal, display, settings, advanced, and then monitor, it shows 4 displays, 3 default, 1 plug and play (laptop)

So, like I said I did quite a few factory restores to no avail, tried disabling everything in the bios, still no luck, so am thinking either a real install (meaing XP from scratch) or deleting something from the registry (alread deleted "unknown" computer.inf installs, but still the same) from the registry might solve the trick.

Toshiba doesn't support IRQ/registry problems (I don't think they have a clue)
and windows won't support the XP pro that came on the system, OEM, even though it has official sticker and number (wonder if I can use that for real install of full XP).

Last, and worst, toshiba said take to to local authorized dealer, I did, the only trouble shooting they did was they took the HD out and put it on another laptop, and the game performed the same way, when I asked what IRQ it was, they said the same, (uggggggg) so much for trouble shooting, this other person is sharing but doesn't know he/she has IRQ sharing...

I'm probably going into the city this weekend (if it rains I'm not goin' anywhere). If I go, I'll swing by a local shop where I saw an A4 with a 64mb x600 a few weeks ago and poke around to see what I can find out about the IRQ's and displays.

Maybe you could try calling technical support agian. My experience with phone support people is that many tend to be very fixated on certain problems that they think are the solution to everything. Once something happens that they can't fix that one way that they know, they resort to getting technicians to resolve the problem (I'm not referring to Toshiba as I've never used their support, but when ever I've had problems from my ISP to a cd player it's alwasy the same). In the end you just gotta keep trying til you get someone that seems to be able to think outside the box.

Thanks, I've tried everything, including using programs as Driver Cleaner, the funny thing is, in safe mode, the two are seperate IRQ's which leads me to believe there is something going on in windows when it boots up. In the bios, you can't change any irq's at all, none, zip, nada.

Trust me, the only other thing I might have to do is a clean install with a full windows XP, and maybe use an older version with SP1. The only question is, how would I re-install all the drivers for the devices (intel wireless, blue tooth, toshiba power saver, etc)..thanks for listening.

Download them here:

burn em to a cd (or throw em on a usb drive)
install windows then install the drivers.

Well, on a trip right now...

Just a few updates until I get back,,,,
while here, I installed FRESH XP SP2, audio was on 10, GPU on 11, that is until I installed sound driver which pushed it to IRQ 11, so that didn't work.

However, I went into system properties and changed the ATI Toshiba driver for X600 to Microsoft ATI Mobility driver (part of SP2) and even though they share the same IRQ, I now longer get the stuttering, just once per minute maybe when playing a video game, otherwise, it seems fine. Ho etvcwever, I don't have all the functionality of 4x anti aliasing, 3d control on display properties, but will use Adobe Photoshop for my display likings (profile)...

Not sure why the product (A4) shipped with GPU on 10 and sound on 11, then changed, did a system restore too x 4 incuding burning dics, still on 11.

Seems that the drivers from Toshiba stink for the ATI at least right now as this should point the device to IRQ 10.

At least now I have a system that is clean, XP Pro SP2, registered corp edition (all the updates I ever will need) and no bloatware....

Will check when I can to see what you guys think...very little access to internet right now.
thanks

Well I am back, as I mentioned a few days back, video and audio sharing IRQ, however, I am not having problems, at least not as to date.

The driver that solved the problem is that I switched from the Toshiba ATIX600 driver to Radeon Mobility (Microsoft Corp) that comes with SP2. I did a fresh install of WIN XP Corporate (that I have a license for) and used this driver.

Driver details"
Date:3/23/2004
Version:6.14.10.6462

Now keep in mind, there is something in the TOSHIBA package that is causing the stalling of audio video vs just installing the driver. Also, I lose the OpenGL and Direct3D etc, tabs, so am not sure what to regarding having this type of control, or rather the lack thereof, vs, stuttering and audio when using the Toshiba package.

Advice still sought after.

thanks
