I think this is an overdramatization of something that's more of a preference than a "design flaw". Is it really that hard for you to move your mousepad a few times a day, max?

Sheesh.

you guys are kidding right? next youll be complaining about how the power button is too hard to push in, or how hard it is to turn the num lock on/off.

HA HA, get real guys.

you know, on my dell 9300, the DVD is on the left side, and right next to it is the usb ports, lol, oh well, it's never been a problem for me

Just use a floppy instead!
i'd rather have the optical slot on the right side than having the vent there.
Well, I'm for front loading, but I also think we should get past this 'sliding tray' crap and they should all be slot loaded ROMs now.

Alright, that's it!

I've had enough. I'm gonna launch a one person boycott of all internal optical drive laptops by buying the Portege R200 WITHOUT an CD/DVD drive.

LOL,

Problem Solved

I prefer the optical drive either on the left or the right, preferably on the left. Right is okay too, as I don't use a mouse very often. One place I don't like is on the front. When I got it on my lap, my belt or my fly ends up pushing the button ejecting the tray. Very annoying.

wow, go buy a floppy drive. I hear ya can put them where the sun dont shine too!

I have 2 lappys, ones on the right and the other on the left. I prefer it on the left myself.

For the lappy with the right side drive, I just prop the notebook far edge on either a book or a breakfast 'n bed tray (to increase air circulation under the notebook and also makes it easier to type).

As a bonus, when I open the drive bay, I only need to move the mouse out of the way because the cd bay can clear the pad when it opens.

Relatively cheap fix, and you get better air circulation too.

it's a laptop! use a freaken TOUCH PAD!
get rid of the mousepad... why the hell do you have a mousepad anyways?

You know what's a REAL design flaw? exhaust vents on the right side.

front loading slot drive on powerbooks FTW

I'm lefthanded. I have ordered and am currently waiting for the Z70Va and having usb ports on the left and the dvd drive was a plus factor in me ultimately ordering the Asus.

i curse every time i put the CD into my uniwill, the powercord always gets in the freaken way. not to mention the usb mouse. my IBM on the other hand, the cord is in the back, no curses there

When your DVDrom drive is on the right side! On the freakin right side! Same side you put your mouse, or plug in USB cables. Whoever thought of this must be a genius, because everytime you pop in a disc into the drive, you have to move your mouse and mouse pad just to open it, then put it back. grr
Odd - my DVD-RW is on the right side, but that's it. There's 2 USB ports on the back of the laptop, with speaker/microphone ports, modem/ethernet, VGA, and S-video also on the back. My PCMCIA, Firewire, and card reader connections are all on the left. And no, I don't have to move my mouse everytime I open the DVD drive either.

figured i'd add my own two cents, my old compaq armada m700 (p3 700mhz) has both the dvd drive and two pcmcia slots on the right....

Front side is no better. In fact, much worse. If you are ever using it on your lap, or just uncareful, the eject button gets depressed. Try dealing with a CD tray randomly popping out and constantly becoming more bent accidentally.

The best place for a disc drive would be as in some of the Panasonic notebooks, where one side of the palm rest lifts up and you drop your disc on the platter like a vinyl or portable CD player. No slot, no tray, almost no breakable parts to wear down. Remove palms, lift, place disc, shut door.

...what if your optical drive, pcmcia slots, and memory stick/card slots are all on the right side! I don't have any issues, I'm usually using a wireless mouse and keyboard. Also the stand for the newer HP laptops is an upright so when I do use a usb mouse or other devices they are not in the way at all.

it should not matter matter, who uses a mouse pad?

I dunno, I got a compal CL56 with the vents on the right hand side and it doesn't bother me none...sometimes it's useful for keeping my fingers warm when I mouse around.
