Terrible Sony Support!

Thread Starter
I have a new $2500 Sony Vaio. I repartitioned it so that the C: drive is 14.6GB, way more than enough for the OS (WinXP Home). I then installed an illegal version of Win XP Pro (I did not know it was illegal at the time) on the disk to avoid all the crapware that comes with the Vaio Recovery disk. I also got rid of the hidden partition.

Now I want to re-install the XP Home that came with the computer because Micro$oft demands legal XP to allow downloads, and because the installation of XP I have is a bit rusty. (Yes, I know there are ways around this but I just wanted to have a legal version, ok?)

NO CAN DO. The Recovery disks from Sony want to destroy all my partitions with my very valuable data. Or, if you go for the C: drive only restore option, the error message "C drive does not exist or drive is too small" stops me going any further!

I spoke to "Terry" (what a f*ckin' idiot) at Sony Support who put me through to "Bob" (CU7B in Florida). They basically told me that their ****ed up version of WinXP wants 15.8GB for the C drive to install XP plus the Sony crapware. I said my C drive is not that large, although at 14.6GB it is far, far bigger than what is needed to install XP. He said: "Go buy another copy of Windows then". I said I'd already bought a copy of WinXP when I bought the computer. He seemed bored and uninterested in anything I had to say. He was rude and dismissive. He then told me: "Go buy another hard drive and back everything up to that, then repartition your C drive and move everything back".

IOW, I can go take a hike. He was completely unwilling to do anything for me; he refused to send me a proper copy of Windows, and he refused to acknowledge that the hidden parameters of the Sony-crippled version of XP amount to a bug to many users. What a prick.

I asked who else I could speak to, and he said "Nobody. I'm the highest you can go." You could hear the smug satisfaction when he said that.

If Sony wants to know why they are losing market share, look no further than your customer service.

BTW, my 3 month old Vaio has just had its malfunctioning DVD/RW drive replaced. It came back in a box that looked like it was used for a football match. The PC itself was dirty and had workshop stickers still on it, and the power cord was so tightly wound up that it is permanently kinked like a telephone cord now. Grrr!

Conclusion: They won't send me a clean version of Win XP because Micro****ingSoft does not allow them to do it (quoth Bob). Why? Because M$ is so greedy that they don't want anyone with an OEM version of Windows that can install onto more than one PC. So what do people do? THEY PIRATE THE ****ING SOFTWARE! Microsoft's greed is sending people rushing to pirate Windows. Poetic justice?

well you have a CD Key, its on the bottom of your unit, go to a Bt and get a XP home ISO (there is nothing illegal about that you have 1 end user copy) and just use the key that came with your laptop no mus no fuss.

also there is lots of NTFS resizing software out there, try a live version of knoppix linux

So just relax alittle.

"Relax a little"?!!!??

I've just spent the last 3 hours resizing all my partitions with Partition Magic. I made C: 16.5GB, about 1GB more than Sony's top Technical upper level expert said I needed.

Guess what? Same error (drive too small).

God, I hate the Sony company.

I repeat myself, relax, I used to work tech support for a little no name company in town, and I can tell you that getting so wired at the situation is not helping. I understand that your frustrated, and that Sony's tech support is not worth anything, but being angry will do you what good?

Just grab a torrent of XP Home SP2, and go with it, as I said before it is legal for you to have a copy, you 1 end user copy (and actually one corp one to, but we are just spliting hairs).

I've calmed down a bit today, but just a bit. I could not find a XP Home torrent on www.torrentspy.com so just d/loaded another copy of XPPro SP2, burned it, installed it and so far so good. Thank god for that.

So far, since buying this expensive new PC from Sony, I've had 4 frustrating and insulting telephone calls with them, one broken DVD/RW drive, and found I have paid for an operating system that is overlaid with junky Sony software so that it is unusable.

I bet I am not the only guy to repartition the C drive to less than [whatever Sony thinks is the right size - insert your guess here]. Look out, people. You're on your own come re-install time!

Luckily, my current Vaio hasn't given me any problem (yet?) warranting calling Sony support, but a previous notebook I had did, and I have to agree with you that the tech guy I spoke to was rude, unhelpful, and condescending. He also told me he was the top guy and I told him that if that was the case, their tech support was in sad shape. Basically, the tech support was non-existent.

I like my Sony vaio. I thik it is an excellent product, and I hope that my experience, as well as yours, are just isollated incidents.

Sadly, my friends, this just keeps getting worse and worse. I am now installing a copy of XP pro since the "Recovery" (what a misnomer!) disk from Sony is pure sh1t. I have many PCs, so I cannot simply remember what Wireless Lan Card and what Ethernet card etc I bought with this computer (there were several choices for each), so I am not sure what drivers to chose to download from esupport.sony.com. With my Dell computers I can login to Dell.com and click on each system I own and see exactly what components are in that system, and choose drivers accordingly. Not so with Sony. I called Sony "Support" and spoke to 3 different people, all of whom had to be FORCED to acknowledge that they CANNOT TELL ME WHAT I BOUGHT FROM THEM. I offered them an order number and a serial number, but they just said, in effect, "duh!"

Even my original email from them just says I ordered a PC for about $2500, but does not list parts.

What a bunch of freeking idiots.

To add insult to injury, I find that when I go to download the newest drivers from Sony, they have messed that up too, listing the older drivers for the ATI600 graphics card as newer than the latest version. Check it out your self here:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-li...ype=Everything

Is there ANYTHING that these buffoons can do right?

Now I'm using Everest Diagnostics to find out what's in this lappy. Fsck you very, very much, Sony.

Check out the Ethernet drivers on that page too. They list the oldest drivers as the newest. Jesus, what a load of bollocks!

Please tell me I am wrong. I can't stand this any more. I'm going to have an infarction! I cannot believe a huge company like Sony is run by a bunch of idiots!!!!!

I'm now going to the websites of the individual component manufacturers for drivers. I have no confidence at all in the Sony esupport website.

Someone, show this thread to one of the dunderheads at Sony High Command please. Maybe then they'll realize why their market share is slipping.

They should also send me a reward for giving them this extremely valuable feedback. I'm not joking.

Another note: I'm finding that the drivers at the manufacturers' sites are MUCH more current and up-to-date.

Uh-huh...sure.

First, calm down. You won't find *any* OEM manufacturer that lists downloads of the current version of their hardware drivers. Dell still lists the current video card drivers for my desktop as being nearly 3 years old. They list what they *know* works and what fixes any problems that have arisen since the initial release of the drivers.

Second, look for a Windows XP 10-in-1 DVD on one of the sites you probably got your illegit copy of XP Pro from. It's what I used to reinstall XP Home using the key on the bottom of my Vaio.

Third, if your attitude was one tenth of what you've displayed here, no wonder Sony support essentially told you to fsck off. I have serious reservations about helping you as it is due to your behavior. You get what you give.

Bullshit. I have 3 Dell's and their drivers are updated regularly and are usually in synch with the vendors' sites.

No, will not download a DVD copy of Home. I've already written that I've taken other action. What's wrong with your reading comprehension?

Third, take your comments about my attitude and shove them up your bottom. The old "shoot the messenger" routine is just so tired, so give it a rest.

Note: I've found that you are pretty much forced to use the drivers Sony supplies. Newer drivers from vendors' websites are mostly rejected due to the proprietary design of the motherboards Sony uses in this machine. So use the Sony drivers but make extra sure you use the latest one. The best way to do this is to download all the drivers from Sony, old and new, and compare the version numbers you see when you run them (obviously cancel before they install so that you can make comparisons).

I hate to bump this thread, but dude, I've owned 3 dells, they were aweswome! But the drivers they have AREN'T the latest. They update them until they have a KNOWN WORKING set. Then they stop, it looks like they are updating, but check back in a year, I guarantee they've stopped updating. As far as proprietary drivers, ALL notebooks have them - far and few between you can rip out an nvidia geforce 6800 and put it into any notebook. I remember a friend of mine had a toshiba and I had a dell 8100. We had the same video card, his died, and I bought a new laptop. Gave him my video card, wouldn't physically fit - WHY? Proprietary. Its pretty common.

I work tech support for a company, if you called me and was complaining about my restore disk not working now that you've repartition/replace/modified/whatever your computer. I would probably tell you the same, restore it to factory and factory settings will work. YOU want to modify your equipment, DON'T expect everything to work flawlessly. I'm sorry this inconveniences you, but please calm down. Take the easy road, install as mentioned before with your product key on your computer.

PC Magazine had the following to say about Sony's notebook support:
Quote:
Sony received the lowest numerical scores in our survey for satisfaction with tech support and repairs. Its notebook numbers, 5.5 and 5.6, border on abysmal, though amazingly, the support figure is quite an improvement over 2004's score of 4.8.

Clearly, Sony must know they have a problem. Why they haven't done a whole lot to improve it ?
this afternoon, i made a fresh install of windows xp sp2 . in fact, this is not very difficult if you did some preparation before moving ahead.

1/ for sure back up your data
2/ re email backup - usually, it was stored at identity /--- folder. but i
went to download dot com to d.l email backup software. (21 days trial )
then this free of charge backup just some clicks you can backup the
whole mailbox.
3/ most important: go to sony to download ALL DRIVERS AND SOFTWARE.

http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-swu.pl?mdl=VGNFS620

3/ main course - if you bt windows copy, do get oem version, not retail
version. retail version not work for our legit product key.

4/ after installation, not install any new software, made a mirror system backup.

found that new instllation wont spend you too much time, but restore your backup will spend few hours. a pain.

its too expensive to employ another 5 people in a foriegn land ;-)

To be honest, I have tried a few notebooks recently, and I havent had one yet that comes with a windows xp cd, as opposed a recovery cd. I currently have an ibm and their solution is to create a hidden partition and recover from there (at least with sony you have your full disk space, and a backup cd lol). A toshiba i recently tried came with a backup dvd.

Lets be fair, a backup dvd is better than nothing if you are in dire straights on the road with no net connection and your computer goes horribly wrong. At least all the drivers are preinstalled!

2 years later, and true to my word, I bought 2 new notebooks from HP a week ago. Very nice machines! I shall never ever buy another Sony product again.
