I can sympathize with you in your troubles with Sony support. I had made numerous calls to them, just to reiterate my story over and over, I have no successful results from this, on hold 4 ever, spoken to rudely, given the loop around and disconnected.
I have the VGN-FZ 290 CTO and it has been defective since it arrived out of the box.
I can't get Vista Business reinstalled w/the power supply plugged in b/c it won't boot.
If i do manage to get an OS installed it crashes all by it self, when the power supply is plugged in. I get all sorts of hardware errors, file corrupt, header checksum does not match computed checksum, overrun, stack based buffer security vulnerability, io device error, no boot manager, Sony error 305:69, driver IRQL not less or equal, and the list goes on and on...
If I charge the notebook for 2 days, keep the power suppy un-plugged for an install (if the battery even lasts long enough) for an attempted install, it says the Hybrid HD is too small. I have run factory diagnostics and they all say all is fine which is so not true.
I have run 3rd party tools using the Ultimate Boot CD and tools, checked memory (memtest86) attempted low level format and re-install resulting in tools and saying there is failure - no HD even present.
I requested a refund and have been denied. Sony Customer Service is the worst I have ever dealt with.
I am stuck with this Lemon. I too am very, very much on the warpath and in correspondence w/the President of Sony Corporate America and their National Customer Relations Department, as well as Sony Style where it was ordered from. (btw: they are just as bad)
Let them know!
