Fried USB ports on the XPS 2

Thread Starter
Can i fry my 4 USB ports on the back of the XPS 2 by asking to much power from it?

I want to connect all of the following to the back :

-one notebook cooler at 12volts
-one Razer diamondback mouse(i guess it uses more power then a regular mouse)
-one nostromo speedpad(little gaming keyboard)
-and a internet connection(instead of the ethernet port i'm using a firewire to USB cable to connect to internet with my laptop)

I'm currently connecting the nostromo and the internet connection to the 2 left side usb ports, cause i'm not sure the other circuits can handle all of those devices together without overheating or some other problem.

Your thread title makes it look like you actually fried your ports.

Personally I don't think anything will happen.... you'll find out when you plug 'em all in right?

Naaa, nothing will happen. What you suffer from, sir, is called paranoia.

You can plug several bus-powered hard drives in there too if you want. If there's not enough power, the computer will TELL you, and they just won't run. Nothing can get fried though.

You'll be fine. It may draw a bit of power away from your GPU, but it should handle well. Fry the ports? Never.

I am using all of my rear ports on my 9300 including a notebook cooler and a PDA cradle running from the cooler, mouse, external keyboard, and USB hard drive. No problems.

Hey shoman, what version of forceware are you using right now?

No, nothing will happen. You can supply 500mA from each port, enough for most devices. If a device needs more it simply wont work, windows will report an unknown USB device (because it is plugged in but not powered). Personally I have 6 USB devices (and 3 USB items) but it was messy and a pain when I needed to go anywhere with my laptop so bought a 7 port powered hub, works kind of like a docking station and only 1 lead coming out the back of my XPS2 (well, 2 if you count the power) and looks much better.
