Durable sleeve for the XPS Gen 2? (searched)

Thread Starter
Well, since last Sunday I've been searching for parts and more acc. needed for my laptop. However, I'm stumped with what I should get in terms of lugging this good-sized Dell XPS Gen 2 around. I've got a pretty big regular jansport backpack right now. My first choice is to buy a good durable sleeve of some sort so it'll protect the laptop in my regular backpack (reason being is I don't want a "steal me" sign on my backpack but if I can't find anything I just might need to get a laptop backpack). I've been looking ever since Sunday (searching forums/websites/etc) and the only 'okay' one that I've found is the Sumdex Impack Guard http://www.ebags.com/sumdex/impactgu...?modelid=48890

However the design I like is the Vyper XL (of course this is designed for powerbooks but the design of this sleeve is similar to what I want; a sleeve that is made with some type of semi-hard material, not just some 1/8 inch cheap nylon/neoprene) http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=93

It's been pretty hard to find a sleeve that'd solidly (if such a word exists) protect my laptop inside my regular jansport since the XPS is pretty big and not many companies make sleeves this big (unless I've been blinded by stupidity?).

Any help would be appreciated. I have searched and read up upon all the laptop backpack options. If I decide to go this route I'm looking at the Kesington Contour but trying to avoid this path if I can.

Thanks again,
Chris

I believe Booq makes the viper sleeve in an XXL and that may fit the XPS 2 - it's worth a phone call.

I went with the Booq Folee Messenger 17 with no sleeve. It works great - I put the XPS 2 and charger in this bag, along with a few magazines/folders - and then use a regular size backpack for other stuff. Not perfect, but I can't handle all of it in one bag.

Thx for the info Shazza, sent them an email. we'll see what they say.

If anyone else has any suggestions that'd be great!

Check out sfbags.com. Their sleevecase is made of ballistic nylon -- bulletproof material. I'm sitting next to mine now. They are amazing!

The Booq sleeves DO NOT WORK with the XPS 2 - I bought the booq Boa XL 2006 (and it came with the Vyper XL - 17) and the XPS 2 is too thick to fit in the bag. The XXL doesn't work either, according to booq.

Could the XPS2 fit into the 2006 Boa.XL without the sleeve?......

Dear Chris,

At this time we have no plans for a Vyper XXL. We have a PowerSleeveXXL that
may fit.

Kind regards,

Ben Parks
the sleevecase looks pretty decent. I was thinking something with a little harder outer shell (like maybe a hard plastic? or i'm sure all you know how the case logic cases feel..the brand that makes a crapload of cd cases ...something of that nature)...=\...or a little more than 1/4" neoprene...but i guess I don't have any other choice...Thanks for the suggestion havoc and the extra info doc.

If you guys got anything else to contribute it'd be highly appreciated!

Just get the Waterfield Designs bag from sfbags.com and forget about it. It's an awesome sleevecase.

Yes, the XPS2 fits nicely in the 2006 Boa XL without a sleeve - which is why i bought the bag. It is a nice bag! Not exactly cheap by any means though...

I don't think there are many options for us 9300/XPS2 users when deciding on a sleeve. I myself have spent numerous days searching all of notebookforums and the web looking for a sleeve for my 9300 and the only ones I found that could fit it properly were the Sumdex Impactguard and the Shoreline Neoprene Sleeves (There might be more, but either they didn't enclose the laptop well, didn't look half decent or I just missed em completely. Notably, the SFBags sleevecase which has an open end. I prefer a sleeve with a flap or zipper.) People say the Shoreline sleeves seemed a little flimsy because of the very thin neoprene layer so I just ended up buying the Sumdex. It fits the 9300 perfectly and should work well with the XPS2 too.

Someone above mentioned the Soft Cell sleeve by TomBihn and that looks like a nice sleeve (if it does fit). It doesn't seem to be out yet (says pre-order on their site).

So I guess these are possibly your only options for a well enclosed and fitting sleeve. I don't know if you will find any others searching the net. I wish they had a Shinza that fit the 9300. That would be the ideal sleeve case for me.

Waterfield Designs does indeed have an addable flap - for a price - but it's still the best sleevecase I've ever seen... by far.

I couldn't agree more... after reading his post I went and ordered a sleevecase (size 45) from sfbags. It will be here by the latest thursday and I will post my review of the sleeve.

BTW, i did order the flap with mine.

I'm ready to pull the trigger as well.

Did you go vertical or horizontal?
Did you add d-rings and a removable shoulder strap?
I went with the horizontal orientation but did not get the strap or the piggyback simply because it will be carried in my backpack. The case looks slick as hell and hopefully it will keep my xps looking good.

For those interested in this sleeve, I just got off the phone with them and they will include the "D" rings with out the shoulder strap for $5. There is no option to do this online (normally $18 for shoulder strap w/ d rings) Just make a note in the comments field when ordering and they will refund the difference upon processing.

This is a good option if you already have a superior / extra shoulder strap or prefer to have the option to add one later on. I plan on clipping on my extra black ballistic tumi shoulder strap when needed.

I looked at the sleevecase from sfbags, but it didn't look like it had all that much padding. Bulletproof fabric is all well and good, but without padding, it's useless.

Anyone actually have one of these and can comment on its protective properties?

You have every reason to be concerned.

I received mine today, and while I love the style, quality of the materials and workmanship, it does fall short when it comes to protection. My 1st thought when opening the package was...hmmm, this sleeve seems kind of thin. The neoprene lining appears to be only 1/4" thick. I may still keep mine for around the house protection and light travel but these things are pricey. I'm waiting for my backpack to arrive to see if I could use them together.

Supraman1120,

Did you get yours yet? Agree with my review?
