If I just use free versions of anti virus.

Sure, as long as you stick to the more reliable free antivirus software like AVG, Avast, etc. and stay current with updates.

It can't be with AVG, but have had no trouble with Avast. I haven't tried any of the other free ones. I found one trojan AVG let through. I then switched to Avast (which caught the one AVG let go). I am VERY pleased with Avast.

I just mentioned AVG first since so many people swear by it. I use Avast also, but more because I can't stand AVG's interface. For the week I used AVG it seemed okay, just thought it was too clunky of an interface. The only thing I don't particularly like about Avast is that it seems to use a little more resources than a few of the other free apps I've tried.

i dont think you can, ive used avg, avast and a few others and avg missed a bunch along with avast, but in my opinion its alot better than not having anything at all.

Depends on the sites you go to.

wanna know why it let it through?

AVG is slow to update, more so with the free version (cause they want you to buy retail version) still the best virus scanner that takes little to keep running in real time

and even with retail versions (to OP): youll still get somthing that goes through, just cause its new and they havent writen for it yet.....its all about keeping up with the time and sometimes they have a hard time keeping up, even the best software out there

I'll give a second vote for Avast! Been using it for about two months now and I love it. It updates every day too, sometimes more than one time per day and it's definitely not a resource hog like the pay programs are..

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. If Avast catches stuff AVG doesn't, I can hardly call AVG the best. I wouldn't even dare put AVG on a system I was keeping off my network after having it fail on me. It's Avast all the way for me, with the occasional Housecall and Panda online scans just to make sure Avast is doing it's job (which apparently it is).

believe as you wish, some companies dont keep up faster than others

because avast found 2-3, or just 1 thing avg didnt, doesnt mean its a bad product, by no means does that mean that

avg is free, they update decently, and i have NO clue what youre websurfing but ive used free scans from panda, and sysmentech? sp* nothing has come up

safe websurfing and downloading is the way to go, i havent had a virus in over 2 years now, the first time i used avg it found 1, since then ive learned how not to get virus/spyware

I also practice safe computing and for the most part never get an alarm or anything unless I have a customers PC on my network before I get it completely clean. I will then get a very rare virus alert. I have yet to have any online scans show anything except when I was using AVG, and that was just the one virus on every PC on my network.

I wasn't saying it was a bad product, but facts are facts. If it misses even one that another free program catches, then it can hardly be considered the best. That's all I was disputing was your claim that AVG is the best. That's like saying car A that you own is better than car B someone else owns, even though it refuses to take you to one spot where you want to go, when car B will take there.

That's not to say there may be one that Avast lets go and AVG finds, but I just haven't found that to be the case "yet". What I have found to be fact, is at least one situation where AVG on 5 machines said clean, even manually scanning the infected archive. Avast picked it up and cleaned it immediately.

Personally i think NOD32 is the best and least intrusive antivirus software out there, although this wasn't ur question, as it does cost a small fee, but there are "alternative" methods of obtaining such..without being specific, or endorsing such, i believe you know what i mean...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Anti-Vir. I'm not saying it's any better than AVG or Avast!, but it is another free alternative.

I have mulitple layes, AVG-free AVG-antispyware (awsome pro for 30days) AdAware, Avast, Spybot, Xoftspy, Windows Defender. All free but xoftspy (which was free thanks to a certain tech friend ) also get a good firewall, ZoneAlarms is always a good choice.

Ummm, I haven't used Anti-virus software in years and have NEVER had any problems with Anti-virus. If you use the internet responsibly. Keep up with your Windows updates and have a good router setup. You shouldn't have any trouble. But that's just me, the only time I've ever gotten ahold of an internet beasty was once at a LAN Party (somebody's Windows 98 box spread Nimda, I was running Win2k) and then there was one time with my Inspiron 8200 that I dialed out from a hotel room and got the MS Blast worm in under 5 minutes (fresh install of XP with now updates to boot.). Other than that no problems (I had my MS Blast removal tool with me for the i8200 as well as the patch). I've found Antivirus software to be little more than bloatware you pay for. But that's just me, not everyone uses the interwebs as reponsibly as me.

Just as a warning for you smart-alicks in the audience, don't think I won't hand out a b& to any of you.
