Fastest 12" notebook?

Thread Starter
I want a notebook with the fastest graphics card. I know most come with integrated graphics, but I know the 12" apple notebook has the 5200. Is that the best gpu in a 12" notebook?
there is a sony (s700 i think) that has the ati 9700 128mb which is faster than the 5200
post #3 of 28
The sony is a 13 inch. The MSI S270 has ATI RS480, which is apparently something like 60% faster than Intel GMA 900?

hands down dell 700m 2.0 Ghz. it has one of the best display i've seen in 12" notebook. the only cons i found in this notebook is 1. no bluetooth, 2. scaled down keyboard. everything else is fantastic for 12" notebook

might be a bit expensive but the Alienware Sentia
post #6 of 28
Okay, the original poster said he was looking for a 12" system with the fastest graphics, which means he wants a dedicated graphics card. The Dell Inspiron 700m and the Alienware Sentia have integrated graphics, knocking both out of the lineup.

^ what he said.

however a note on the sentia, just go to any other reseller that carries uniwill laptops and grab yourself a 233IIO, much cheaper.

Is the sony really 13"? Well, from what I've seen its still a pretty small and awesome lappy.

Yeah, 13.3 I believe.

Let's get this straight. There is NO 12 inch laptop with dedicated graphics. It does not exist. The Sony 13" is the smallest laptop with dedicated graphics.

Whenever I hear someone say "never", I end up wasting a lot of time with google to prove them wrong

Integrated is probably more powerful than that 32 MB disgrace.

Wrong. This guy obviously doesnt know what hes talking about

There exist several 12 inch laptops with dedicated graphics...

Some off the top of my head....

Compaq TC1000
IBM X31
Compaq TC1100
Sharp 12 inch laptop (cant remember the name, but it is all white).
Toshiba m200 12 inch, with SXGA+ res.

Wait that maybe true and all but all the videocard listed above are slower then the intel GMA, way slower then the xpress200m. A shitty chip with memory (like the GF5200 or Gf4 440, or a readon 9000/9200) is still a shitty chip. The tech on those card is from 2000-2001, you have to be joking, i don't think any of them are above Dx8, at least the GMA is DX9,

oh and the Sony S is acutally smaller then alot of the 12 inch(smaller the the m200) you see because of the wide screen, its like a 12inch ibook (i tiny bit longer horiz.) and shorter vertically, and it may just be me, but alot better looking.

Allright, you guys are right, I'm wrong. But you've sort of missed my point. When people say they want a 12" laptop with dedicated graphics, they mean they want a 12" laptop with a dedicated graphics card with 128 MB of RAM that will play games. The most graphics memory I saw on those models you listed was 32 Mb, and most of them are tablet PCs (I'm guessing Intel's integrated graphics just don't work with tablet PCs). So OK, there are 12" laptops with a dedicated graphics card, but we all know that's not what these people want when they ask for a 12" laptop with dedicated graphics.

There's also the Portege R100 (not a tablet). I don't know how powerful the gpu is.

From ToshibaDirect:

Ultra-powerful!

No need to sacrifice power for portability! The Portege R100 is only .7" thick* and weighs a mere 2.4 lbs.*! With Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology*, this system outperforms many Pentium® 4 models!

Systems feature Trident XPm32 LP graphics* w/32MB DDR memory for smooth business graphics. Primary and high capacity batteries are included for up to 6.5 hours* total battery time! An optional docking solution is also available to make in office connections simple and easy!

From ToshibaDirect:

Your joking right, I don't think that card will run 3dmark01, I will say it again, just because it has memory does not mean shit, especially if the memory is slower then the DDR2 533 that sits under the your new Sanoma laptops. With the new PCI express arch, its not the same performance hit it once was to use system memory, and if you videocard has mem that is slower then the systems (pci express based only) it might be your cards ram thats the bottleneck, kinda a crazy turn of events.

The Apple Powerbook has the Geforce FX 5200, while the Apple iBook (which I think is the better deal) has the Radeon 9550.
