What happened to Fujitsu?

I used to own a Fujitsu Lifebook C2230. Beautiful gaming machine, absolutely wonderful. 768 RAM, 2.6 Processor, all the bells and whistles. The thing even ran Morrowind with no problem!

I had to sell it for cash, but when I went back to their site to check their stuff out (being in the market for a new laptop and all), I was surprised. The C2230 is gone and replaced with a wealth of laptops that are 1.6 processors, 256 RAM, less hard drive space and worse... twice as expensive.

The heck happened? Is there a number I missed somewhere or am I reading the specs wrong? Fujitsu will always get my business after that dream laptop, but seriously, I don't know what the heck happened to their laptops.

Any ideas, or should I go on the hunt for an old C2230 and re-live the glory days?

Comparison:

LifeBook C2230 notebook (My baby, circa 2003)

Genuine Windowsョ XP Professional
Intelョ Pentiumョ 4 Processor 2.6GHz processor
15" SXGA+ TFT
768MB DDR SDRAM memory
40GB hard drive
Built-in DVD-RW, DVD/CDRW combo, DVD, or CD-ROM drive
Built-in floppy disk drive
Built-in multinational 56K V.90 modem and 10/100 Base-Tx Ethernet
Optional Built-in wireless LAN (802.11b/g)
Four USB 2.0, one IEEE 1394, and one S-Video port
Memory Stickョ/SD slot
One-year International Limited Warranty

- $1100 with extra RAM and carrying case included

Keep in mind that I bought the C2230 about three years ago, and it with extra RAM and carrying case still cost a few hundred dollars LESS than the C2340 does.

What gives?

Thanks for any advice.

Well, there's the obvious difference between Pentium 4 and Pentium M there, which explains the difference in GHz's, but, other than that, I cannot explain the difference...

Oh, is that what I misread? Is Pentium M the next stage up from P4, and they just decided to switch to letters? And would the speed be about the same?

If that's the case, then we might have found the discrepancy. Thanks!

pentium m is based on the p3 architecture which is superior to the p4

they are phasing out the p4

Bottom line is, that 1.8GHz PM would beat your 2.6GHz P4 in most applications.

Thanks for the assist, guys. Good to know Fujitsu is working with the times and still making killer laptops. And knowing is half the battle.

Everything on the circa 2005 one IS faster/better. The ram most likely is running at a higher speed. Bigger hard drive (and probably running at a higher rpm). The PM which is much more efficient than the P4. The networking card.

With deals you could probably get that down from the ~$1300 retail price also. There is nothing to complain about. I would recommend trying other companies though. Check this site out, there are quite a few manufacturers that have many coupons/rebates just waiting to be snatched up. Do not be confined to a european company.

Although Fujitsu is freaken awesome (except the Almino based on the Uniwill 258KAO) zetherin is right, lookie at other companies before you make up your freaken mind

You could easily get comparable machines at a significantly less cost than the fujitsu. Check out cyberpower or ibuypower...

Oh and another thing... Pentium M is much more power efficient than P4. Depending on the size of the battery of the notebook, you could get as much as 4-5 hrs (as some companies claim) of battery life. With a P4, you're lucky if you get 1.5 hr battery life.
