Windows 2003 admin pack - Remote Desktops - causing system crash

Anybody else here use the Windows2003 Admin pack from MS? I use the remote desktop app ALL the time at work for managing multiple servers that I terminal service (aka remote desktop) into. Occassionally when connecting with it my machine will emit a LOUD beep and just shut down. I never happens with the XP remote desktop. But get this wierdness... if I use the XP remote desktop and term serv into my work PC and THEN use the admin pack Remote Desktops program it'll STILL do the loud beep/crash.

Anybody else having this issue/found a way to resolve it?

Both of your issues seem to be while you are remote connecting in. I don't think it has to do with the Remote Desktop app, since you use Terminal Services in the other instance. Check your VPN client. Also, are you using a wireless or wired connection to connect? Does it crash with that beep on any other app?

There are two apps that can be used for remote connectivity: Remote Desktop connection (like the one that comes with XP), and Remote Desktops (which comes in the 2003 admin pack). Remote Desktops gives a left hand navigation bar that list several connections, the right side of the screen then contains the "view" of the connection you are currently viewing. You can flip back and forth between different remote connections from one client instead of having to open several different Remote Desktop (xp style) instances.

I crashes while on the VPN, and it crashes when I use it locally at home.

I'm using wireless, and I haven't seen it beep/crash on anything other than Remote Desktops (2003 admin pack).

Yes I use Remote Desktops all the time. I assume when you say you use it locally at home that you are connecting to home machines.

My advice is to try a wired connection next.

Sorry I don't have a solution to your crashing, but have you tried RealVNC? I use VNC on my laptops without a problem. Works the same as Remote Desktop as far as I know.

I can't make it happen consistently, or I'd try a wired connection temporarily to see if I can do it. Ya by locally I meant home connections. Howdogg74, do you have an Audigy by any chance? I'm wondering if that might have something to do with it. Unlike the XP remote desktop, Remote Desktops doesn't give you the ability to tell it to NOT bring sounds to the local pc.

I used VNC in the past, but Terminal Services comes with Windows, requires no third party software, and is lightening fast. Plus... I have a hard enough time getting clients to turn on terminal services, much less installing a 3rd party app, so VNC isn't really an option for me.

You can disable audio mapping from the server side though, if that's a possibility for you. It's in Terminal Services Configuration, properties on the RDP-TCP connection.

To it sounds more like hardware issues than software issues. What exactly are you doing when the system crashes? That will help us pinpoint more of what the problem is. If you believe the Audigy is at fault, uninstall and remove it for the time being. If the problem does not occur, you've isolated the issue. Are the servers you are connecting to secure?

Again, I'd try a wired connections for a few days.

I'll have to check the term ser configuration. That'd be an option for here at home, but probably not on my client's machines.

It seems that it happens the most right as I log in to the machine. I'll enter the username/password then blamo... shut down.
