Ordered a new laptop? My handy template to use to contact Dell to get the backup CDs - Page 4

Still Trying

Just got 3 small boxes (one CD with lots of room per box) containing:

Windows XP with SP2 (seems like the right product number, as mentioned in other replies in this chain)

Application CD (Antivirus, Multimedia, Internet...on label) "for reinstalling Dell Tools System Software) part number is suspect as it is H8516.93894 and shipping description reads "CDSK, SW,Dell-Apps, BKUP25, DIM"

The 'DIM' worries me cause the 3rd disk part CD016.93894 (labeled "KIT,CDSK,DRVR,RSD,DIM,V2") and on the disk label it reads "Dell Dimension ResourceCD".

Did they send the right "Drivers and Utilities" and "Application" disks?

I ordered my 700m last night and took the advice of this thread and sent out an email. I received a reply in a few short hours (on a Saturday no less) and he said that once I receive my system he will send out the backup cd's. He also said in order to keep me as a valued customer he's upgraded my shipping on my laptop from 3-5 business day to next day delivery. Can't complain about that.

thats incredible, I first read this post and thought people at dell are gonna catch on and notice this same topic popping up too much, but theres a good chance that even though we feel like a large group here we are really just a smidgion of a 10th of 1% and they'll never notice out of the who knows how many lame emails they get each day, I say lame because I once worked at a HP call center and the stuff the avergage person complains about is ridiculous. I once had a person ask if the new pentium will help them type faster, I said Yes!

1st, thanks for the informative thread!

however, a couple questions for you guys:

1) does EPP purchases still have backup CDs?
2) if not.. does anyone know of a generic sales email address for EPP? i can't seem to find it on dell's website, not to mention that it's EXCRUCIATINGLY slow today..

done trying?

Finally got back to my quest after being told I needed an answer about the which were the correct disks from Tech Support AND I could not contact them via e-mail. Finally found time to sit on the phone for 43 minutes to prove I had been sent the wrong disks.

What I believe are the right disks arrived in one day via courier.

Oh, yeah "Lilly" at Tech Support based in some far way land "Rocks". She cut to the chase and did not run me thru the "the guy on the phone is and idiot" script of 14,000 silly questions.

My M170 should be here on Monday (should have been here Thursday, but that's a holiday here ... grr). I hadn't read this thread when I ordered, but I'll look in the box and see what I get.

Yay! My M170 arrived! And guess what -- I got a system disc, shrinkwrapped with the Windows owners guide. Maybe they include that for XPS customers...

Yeah Mohapi, I don't know the specific terms on which system lines do an don't get backup CDs (I'm assuming the 'flagship' XPS line does get them though)

Oh, and I posted this up on Slickdeals and it's got another 4k+ hits on it Dell is getting hammered. Oh well, we truely are a small segment though... so I guess it's just cost effective for them to send them out to shut us up.

Good deal on some of you getting Concession Coupons and upgraded Shipping... that rocks

Man getting these installation cds is a pain and I'm still in the process to get them.

I spoke chatted with 3 customer support guys.

The first one was a freaking moron. Said he was only going to send me the window xp pro and nothing else. I think i confused him by saying that I wanted the cds for programs that come preinstalled on my laptop. However dell includes the cds for preinstalled programs. During the process of trying to talk him into sending me the other cds, he just left the chat session.

The 2nd one kept saying that he could not help me since i ordered the EPP division, but also said that my order for just the window xp cd was cancelled. But this guy was much more helpful than the first one, he didn't just end the chat session out of the blue like the last idiot. Also when i asked him if dell even makes the cds available? He said, " Name, you can definitely purchase a copy of the installation CD's"
At this point i was like WTF!!!!!

The 3rd one answered all my questions directly instead of copying and pasting crap and sending it to me. I almost had the cds sent, but then noticed that i ordered through the EPP divsion. Therefore he was not authorized to make the request for the cds. But he did give me a phone number to the right divison to call for the cds. Too bad they're not available on sundays.

Anyway i think what made it so confusing was my problem title. For the first guy i titled it "operating system disk and utilites."

For the second guy i titled the problem as "verifying order", because i wanted to know if the first guy placed my order for the win xp cd. The customer service people probably look at the title and just do a search on their computer for an answer.

For the thrid guy i titled the problem as "Request for Installation CDs". This guy got right to the point and one of the first questions was: "Hi Name, Would you like the installation CDs pack sent out to you?"

So its all about the title i guess. I should have put in "Request for Installation CDs for the title and the beginning to avoid the confusion.

I have successfully requested all the CDs including the Sonic DVD & PowerDVD CDs but today (about a month after I received the CDs) I received a mail from Dell containing an invoice for them (Sonic & PowerDVD) asking me to pay up within 10 days!!! Wonder what's up??? Logged in to my account on the Dell website & there is nothing regrading my requesting for the CDs?!?!? Anyone had this problem too???

finally got my dell cds coming in by DHL tomorrow.

I shouldn't have even bothered calling them, because today i finally got an e-mail saying that the cds are going to be shipped. Wish i knew that before i spoke with 2 more reps on the phone.

Most of the reps i talked to just gave me the usual BS about dell stopped shipping new comps with the cds, BUT you can buy them!!!

E-mail them or online chat maybe. Keep fighting it, eventually you'll find some representative that will actually help you.

I used the handy template and after a few emails back and forth Dell sent all of the disks I asked for. They even sent me another Windows XP MCE license

Speaking of Windows MCE...a friend of mine has the Microsoft Action Pack and before Dell shipped off my MCE disk, I asked him for a copy of his MCE CD so I could reinstall my OS. Believe it or not, but the Dell MCE license key worked (and activated) without any problems. Now, thanks to Dell, I can install my free second license on another PC.

Are they going to come to your house and take the CD's your rightfully paid for with your computer away?

I would throw the invoice out and not think another thing about it. If there is a charge on your credit card, dispute it. I bet it will be forgotten about.
