Battery life on M40

I've heard that you can get 3 hrs MAX. Is this with the power management setting set on "power save" and the screen brightness turned down? Just surfing the web? Listening to music?

Also, how many hrs can you get out of the extended 12 cell battery? How much weight does it add to the laptop, and does it stick out the back?

Thanks!

sticks out yes...weight..not sure but basically 2x.

stock battery is 6 cell....so 12 cell equals DOUBLE the capacity...equals 2x as much battery life.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone have pics of how much it sticks out? Also, any idea how much an ext. battery is (cdn)?

$249 list price

Adding to what YP5 said, I had the same question a while back about how much it sticks out, but on a tecra A4 and posted a picture request here in the forums. Since the A4 and the M40 are VERY similar in size and shape, I thought I'd pas you the link so you can see for yourself. http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=82229

according to toshiba the weight is 1.42lbs, so about .7lbs more than with the regular 6 cell battery.

Perfect...

the A4 and the M40 are actually built on the same platform...so those pics are exactly what it will look like.

Make sure to turn off all the different things you don't need in device manager to cut down on power use. Even including stuff like DVD drive which probably eats up a lot of power. Yes the screen brightness can be controlled from the keyboard using Fn Keys. The video card default setting for battery mode is to turn on power saving setting to MAX so that also helps. Also I believe the CPU speed is lowered before fans turn on if you're running on battery to save the most power. I really think that what I said is true. If the machine is used efficiently, there's no reason to worry about the battery life.

Thanks for the responses. $249 for the ext. battery??! That's awful. I don't think it's worth it. Plus it seems to stick out the back quite a bit.

I just ordered an M40 with a 6-cell & a 12-cell battery. The 12-cell only cost an additional 150, not 250.

I already received the 12-cell battery, and it doesn't look very big (it wasn't as big as I expect to be). Of course, I've never had a laptop before, so I didn't know what to expect. I think I will be able to manage with the 12 cell when I need the extra battery.

Watch out though, I heard that the 12 cell battery is about .17 of an inch taller, which will actually make the back of the laptop rest on the battery. A man from Toshiba told me this on the phone. I will know more about this issue when I get my laptop next week.

Hopefully that helps.

not not too bad, the sager 3880 has that kind as its primary. its expensive but i think worth it if you really need the extra capacity, the problem is that likely not many are sold so the price is higher with them.

the high cap doesnt increase the height......
very true YP5, but i was refering to the amount that it sticks out the back of the machine.... on the sager it does increase the height but on the toshiba as shown by the pics it is still nice and flat, and i really do prefer the toshiba flat to the sager being raised.

YP5 was pricing in canadian dollars.
~$150US from Toshiba direct US for the 12 cell and ~$250CDN for the same from Toshiba Canada.

pricing I gave was CAD.

That makes sense - sorry. Thanks.

About the height difference in the 6 cell compared to the 12 cell. Are you guys saying that the 12 cell on the M40 does NOT make the laptop raised? A guy from Toshiba told me it raised it by about .17 of an inch.

does NOT raise the machine at all.

take a look at the picture in the link I posted in post #5 above. Doesn't appear to be raised at all, and if it is, it's definately much less than 1/10th of an inch.
