Gateway M505XL

I went to my local Gateway Country store yesterday and spent some time examining and playing with the M505XL laptop that they have on display. What follows are my impressions and conclusions with a focus on information that is not stated in the M505XL information at Gateway's website. The M505XL was connected to the internet but had only basic Windows and Gateway software installed. During my visit, I did not attempt to load and run any benchmarks.

The M505XL is smaller and lighter than I expected. The M675 next to it looked like a monster by comparison. The M505XL is made of silver-grey plastic with a nubby texture that is easy to grip. The laptop seems very sturdy with no detectable flexing of the case or creaking of hinges when hefted, twisted, opened or closed.

To the left of the keyboard are CD/DVD control keys, a small LCD display like on a portable CD player, and volume control keys. To the right of the keyboard is the power button and five hot keys, including two user-programmable hot keys. The keys on the keyboard are made of a dark blue, transparent plastic like the cases of some Game Boys and calculators. The feel of the keyboard was about average, neither exceptionally good nor bad. I did notice some flexing of the keyboard when the central keys were pushed down hard, but no more than other laptops the same size. After I cranked up the sensitivity in the Control Panel, the trackpad was quite responsive. The mouse buttons on the trackpad were somewhat stiff, but not nearly as stiff as the button on an Apple Powerbook (for example). According to the Device Manager, the trackpad is made by Synaptics. I could not determine the manufacturer of the keyboard.

The main LCD display was very clear and bright with vivid colors. The viewing angle was also quite good, with at least +/- 45 degrees of viewing possible in the horizontal direction. I did not find the 1280 x 800 resolution of the display to be either coarse or grainy. During DVD playback, I did notice slight ghosting during rapid scene changes which makes me wonder about the response time of the LCD display. I was not able to determine the make and model of the display from the Device Manager.

The M505XL seemed to be virtually silent. I held my ear right against it and could only hear the fans whirring in the M675 next door. The sound produced by the two speakers on either side of the palm rest and by the subwoofer was better than I expected. The sound was clear and full with something of a "surround sound" effect. The speakers were able to be played at room filling (though not floor shaking) volume.

The slot loading DVD-RW drive in the front of the M505XL is quite slick. I learned from the Device Manager that it is a Mat****a UJ-815A. By coincidence, it is the same 2X Panasonic DVD drive that Apple uses in their high end G4 Powerbooks. Apple calls it their "Superdrive". DVD playback produced good quality images.

No specifications on the hard drive used in the M505XL are available on the Gateway website or from Gateway sales reps. According to the Device Manager, the hard drive is an "IC25N060ATMR04-0". I have determined that this is a 60GB model of the Hitachi Travelstar 80GN series. It offers 12 ms average seek time, 4200 rpm and an 8MB cache. It is a good quality drive, just not a terribly fast one.

The Device Manager reports that the computer is a "Wistron DG8LXLG". From this, I conclude that Gateway does not buy the M505 from Gigabyte as I originally thought. Instead, both Gateway and Gigabyte buy the DG8LXLG from Wistron. Gateway calls it the M505 and Gigabyte calls it the N601. It should still be possible, however, to get drivers and FAQs from Gigabyte's website if need be. Wistron is a Taiwan-based manufacturer of ODM PCs that was spun off from Acer. According to this article HP has selected Wistron to manufacture the bulk of its consumer desktops.

The M505 is the current bargain among laptops that offer both a Pentium M CPU and ATI 9600 graphics. My chief complaint with the current model is the relatively slow hard drive. Nonetheless, I could live with this laptop if nothing better comes along before I make my purchase (probably 1Q2004).

I was just in my (reasonably local) gateway store to check out the 505. I definately like it, and was more than pleasantly suprised by the battery life ( 4.25 hours I believe it said when I unplugged the power source). I am definately buying this little jewel- does anyone else have it yet?

I would definately like to see some benchmarks if anyone recieved this system yet.

Last night, Gateway seems to have raised the price of the M505XL from $1899 to $1999. I didn't think my review was THAT positive . To me, it does not seem that the M505XL is worth $400 more than the M505X.

Well, I just ordered the M505X last week and it supposedly ships 11/21 so I'll prolly get it the next week or some time after that. I'll be sure to let you guys know how it runs. For the price, it's a deal with the 9600 graphics in it. I HOPE it will work with the first batch of Dothan CPUs next year (1.8GHz+) before they up the FSB and have DDR400 support as I plan to upgrade that and the hard drive to a 7200rpm one at a later date if possible.

BTW: Thanks BargainSeeker for the preview as I've yet to see one in person cuz my local Gateway country has yet to get theirs....

I am in the market for a laptop (primarily for my wife at work), and interestingly enough this laptop has caught my eye. Initially, I was going to get her a laptop with integrated video, but we have decided to up the budget. A few questions about this model.

1. Did it appear to have room for an add-on modular battery or floppy drive? I realize that its not customizable at this time, but I hope it becomes so at a later date. While outdated, I would prefer the floppy drive as my wife is a bit computer challenged, and it would simplify her writing an essay in class and printing it up in the school library or computer center.

2. How obtrusive would a add on 54G card be in the system? My home wireless has 54G and the 505 doesn't appear to be configurable to have intergrated above 802.11b.

3. Any rebate or % off deals with Gateway that anyone is aware of, or know a good site that would list them as they appear?

I am also considering the Gateway 450X as a potential buy, as it has a modular floppy, intergrated 54G capable, 2nd battery. However, it has a weaker video and less memory while costing $240 more for the configuration I liked.

i was at a gateway store yesterday... regarding the floppy issue, a usb flash memory stick would make a lot more sense...

i have a recently bought HP ZT3000/X1000 equivalent so I compared the two... honestly if the gateway came with a higher speed hard drive option I think i would jump for the gateway like NOW....

anyway heres my review... i tried to be unbiased but am trying to justify keeping my hp... i like the gateway A LOT though....

this review was originally wrote for a HP forum =)

Ive had my ZT3000 for 3 weeks now. It is a great laptop no matter how you look at it and it looks like Gateway is trying to trump our computers.

I went to the Gateway Country store and checked out the new 505. I took my ZT3000 out and put it right next to the 505.

Size=almost identical (ZT3000 slightly thinner) Advantage=HP by a little =)

LCD=I have the WSXGA+ vs Gateway has WXGA. Gateway seemed slightly brighter just like a HP/Compaq with WXGA would be over the WSXGA+ screen. I like having the higher res and crispness of the WSXGA+ but this is kind of subjective as the WXGA is nice too. Advantage=about same

Keyboard=Advantage=about the same (Gateway has semi see thru plastic)

Sound=Gateway was supposed to be better with the "subwoofer" and all, but my ZT3000 with the harmon kardons was louder. In terms of sound quality the gateway "might" be better or it "might not". I just know my laptop was louder and thats important to me. Advantage=compaq/HP

Esthetic design=this is a highly subjective matter as some people here think ZT looks ugly compared to X1000 vice versa.... The Gateway was nice... no wow factor.. but is any laptop that pretty? maybe an apple? I dont know... advantage=neither

Functional design=The gateway is functionally better designed in my opinion. For starters, they have the CD/DVD slot type (like in your car) on the front of the laptop vs side. I think thats a nice advantage. The USB plugs are on the right side (2) with one in the back. I think thats better then all three in the back like ours. The A/C power plug is in the back compared to right side like ours. And THEY HAVE TWO firewire plugs 4 pin/6 pin vs 4 pin only in HP. So Functional design=advantage Gateway.

Hardware=they have 9600 graphics chip vs 9200 on ours. We have many more options to customize our hardware. We have 54g option they dont. We have 5400 rpm hard drive option they dont. Its 4200 rpm 40 gig on 1600 dollar model or 4200 rpm 60 gig for the 1900 dollar model. They have slot loading CD/DVD we dont. Hmmmmmm Advantage= depends on whats more important for you. For gamers I guess the 9600 chip could make a difference.

Price=advantage=HP/Compaq

Build quality=I didnt buy the Gateway so i could only look at its quality from within the store and sometimes little quality issues come up after youve used something for a while, but from my short time with the 505 I think it has better build quality then our HP/Compaq. The 505 is made in the Philippines vs China for HP. I dont know if that makes a big difference, but an example is the lid closure on the Gateway seems a little tighter vs HP doesnt shut as flush. Also, my touchpad has a slight lift on it like it wasnt glued down properly (I dont know if glued is the right word). Advantage=gateway

I love it factor=HP/Compaq
I have a slight whistle/buzz noise from the right side that bugs me but besides that I am in love with my HP. Im into graphics and video so the two firewires on the gateway seem like a huge advantage but I couldnt fall in love with the gateway as easily as I did with the HP. Maybe if they had 54G, the WSXGA+ screen, lower price, and slightly better sound I might have liked it better.. not sure.

I have one week left to decide if Im keeping my ZT3000... i called yesterday to HP support to return my ZT and couldnt do it... they said ok pack everything as it came and well pick it up tomorrow and I panicked... I said let me think about it for a few more days =)

Anyway, Im torn...
wow i wrote a lot...
I guess if gateway could be custom built with more options and priced similar to HP i would go with gateway but at this time thats not possible... so i hope HP comes out with ZT3200 or whatever they want to call it with slot dvd/cd drive, two firewires and 9600 graphics chip.... SOON.

Wow. Nice comparison, thkim! Pretty thorough and from a "regular person's perspective" - I like that.

The table here shows that the Gigabyte N601 (the same laptop as the Gateway M505) can handle Pentium M and Dothan CPUs up to 1.8GHz.

I suggest checking with Gateway to be sure, but I don't believe it has room for either. If your wife insists on using a floppy, she could use an external USB floppy drive. With 4 hours plus of battery life, why would she need a second internal battery?

This could be added easily with a PCMCIA card in the Type II PC card slot.

I know Gateway gives discounts to employees of many large organizations. I suggest checking with Gateway to see if your or your wife's employer is one of them. You could also check online coupon sites by doing a Google search on "Gateway coupon".

thkim: Thanks a lot! The HP ZT3000 is the exact laptop I am considering besides the Gateway 505 and Gateway 450X.

Can you tell me what kind of battery life you get in normal application and also with games or DVD's with the ZT3000?

I was on the AnandTech website, reading part 2 of their review of the Voodoo Envy M:855, when I got to their close up of the keyboard. It looks to me like this keyboard is the same one as on the Gateway M505.

Here is what AnandTech had to say about this keyboard:
"The keyboard is something that we have come to expect from desktop replacement notebook: full sized, good response, and a tactile feel. Unlike many of the notebook keyboards we have seen, the Voodoo keyboard is translucent, which adds to the aesthetic appeal. Though, this has another unforeseen benefit. Over time, notebook keyboards get dirty and/or some small article lodges itself between keys and prevents full functionality. The translucent keyboard allows for the user to tell how dirty the keyboard is and if anything is lodged between keys. On the other hand, a non-translucent hides the dirt."

my ZT gets about 3 hours battery time with normal usage.... half browsing web pages and half listening to music. I think with the screen dimmed a bit and just word processing it will get 4.25 hours....

watching a dvd or playing a video game at full brightness and cd drive going it gets about 2.5 hours....

i think its probably about the same or slightly less then the gateway......

i still havent decided whether to return my zt3000 or go with gateway...... i wish gateway had option of a faster hard drive.......

5400 rpm

[/color]I just contacted one of the gateway esales advisors and they said that the xl version has a 5400 rpm hard disk. Here is the link where the information is displayed also:

The Toshiba MK6022GAX hard drive is faster than the Hitachi IC25N060ATMR04-0. In addition to 5400rpm, it also offers a 16MB cache instead of 8MB while keeping the same 12ms average seek time. It seems to me that Gateway is responding to customer feedback and equipping the M505XL with a faster hard drive.

You should realize, however, that some of the M505XL laptops that Gateway has in stock are equipped with the slower drive. I can tell you for sure that the M505XL at my local Gateway Country store was so equipped. If drive speed is important to you, I would get a statement in writing from Gateway that the laptop you receive will be equipped with the Toshiba MK6022GAX drive. Then, once you get the laptop, I would go into the Device Manager and double check that you have in fact received the faster drive.

thank you for the info... i will be ordering now... the hard drive speed was all that was holding me back
post #17 of 950
If anybody already has the M505, please post a review as I am very interested to hear how this machine is doing.

Thanks,
well i just ordered the m505x, not the xl, last night.
stupid thanksgiving, getting in the way of my delivery. I will get it around dec. 10th, hopefully sooner. I will definately post some reviews and benchies when i get it.

I was thinking about the XL, but $400, even $300, is too much for such a little difference. 1.4 to a 1.5 is not a big deal to me, the hard drive difference isn't tremendous, although the speed is quite nice on the XL, and although I would love a DVD-R, that is too much a price difference and I wouldn't use it that often.
O well.

Can't wait to get it.
Thanks Kwick7!

Here is hoping that you get your lappy as soon as possible and I am looking forward reading your comments.

Happy Thanksgiving anyway!
Well, mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow.... so I'll be sure to post benchies. Is there any in particular you'd like? It is the M505X though so I'm sure it will differ a bit though. I can say, however, that the machine is a beauty. I saw it at Gateway Country yesterday as they got their demo unit in.
