Don't know what state you're in, but I'm up here in Seattle and just ordered a
505X for the advertised price of $1,499. I think it depends on what state you're in as to what tax rate they apply. I got charged $133.99 on top of the price of the computer for taxes which works out roughly to 8.9%
From what the customer service rep told me, if there's a Gateway store in your state, then you get charged taxes (hmm . . . so that's puzzling why the guy in FL didn't get hit
On another note, for all you guys out there who have got stiffed or at least feel like they got stiffed by ending up with the slower Hitachi hard drive vs. the faster Toshiba, here's proof positive that it pays to be persistent and very firm.
When I first called Gateway to order my 505X, I inquired to the customer service rep what hard drive the X model came standard with. To my surprise, he told me the 5400 rpm Toshiba. Having seen previous posts about this, I immediately asked for a written confirmation from him so that I would not end up with the Hitachi hard drive. That was on Monday, Dec. 22, and he assured me he would e-mail me the next day with a written confirmation.
Fast forward to today, Dec. 24, and still no answer . . . no e-mail, no phone call, no nothing -
I'm starting to get very irate at this point and decide to take matters into my own hands with Mr. Gateway.
Long story short, I end up talking with the guy for at least 30 minutes, emphasizing that he in fact did tell me that I would get the Toshiba hard drive, and not the Hitachi. I really blew up when he questioned why I was getting so upset about something so "trivial". Well, all I can say is that I kept persisting and being very firm, not rude, with the guy. In the end, all this persistence paid off. He agreed to give me the XL model for the same price I paid for the X model, and to top it off I got free overnight shipping thrown in as well.
So, for anyone who reads this having the same frustration(s) I did, just keep in mind my experience. Merry Christmas to you all!
