Gateway M505XL - Page 45

I got mine up to 1.25G Mem about two weeks ago, bought that Kingmax from Newegg. Gave one old 512mb to my sister and the other one to my bro -- don't want to be greedy here Their system only have 256mb so they need upgrade more than I do. Beside I get two free big dinners
I can feel quite a different moving from 1.0G to 1.25G, which is to my surprise
Good news is that I don't feel significant heat increase. May be I will move it to 2.0G unless I find some new announcement to my very liking that will make me want to buy a new system by the end of this year.
So those who hesitate to bring up thier 505 series memory, I highly recommend doing it. Get Kingmax 1.0G from newegg, which is now pretty cheap (I bought 512 upgrade a lot more expensive when I first got my lappy even from Newegg). The upgrade is worth it, my 0.02 cents

has anyone update their drives on their M505x? I have the standard CD burner but was wondering if anyone was successful with that upgrade. I know someone in this forum had tried with one drive model but was unsuccessful. Anyways, my m505x is great, still running great especially with the gig of ram. I'm thinking about upgrading the hard drive soon though.

You may want to try recalibrating your battery. Perhaps you use yours on battery so much that it runs out of its life cycle. Anyhow here are instructions.

1. Fully recharge your battery.
2. Close all applications.
3. Set your powersetting to always on.
4. Unplug your AC adapter.
5. Let your lappy stands to run down battery.
6. Once you lappy turn itself off, plug in your AC adapter.
7. Power up and fully recharge your battery and change your powersetting.

Try to use your lappy on battery again and see what happens.

I have mine for over a year and battery still gives me more than 4 hours. I mostly use mine on AC though. Except when I travel. When I am on battery, I almost always drain it down to around 10% before turn it off or put back AC power.

Good luck

thanks for the advice!i'm gonnna give it a shot! i mostly have it on AC also! as i said it shows i got over 4 hours of battery life, just this morning i took it to my living room and it only last for 2 hours!!! BTW my power setting was on portable/laptop.....

Is there a recalburation battery option for the m505 series laptop? i dont see one in the bios... my battery is completely dead and does not hold a charge at all. The sad thing is I never actually used the battery. I left it 100 % charged and stored away.

Any ideas if i can still salvage this battery? It was a new replacement by gateway 6 months ago.

I've always leave my battery in my m505 and plugged in. But, I think my battery might start loosing its life

M505x speaker problem

Greetings to all - I continue to be (since May 2004) very happy with my M505x except for one thing. The left speaker stopped working. I assume the connection came loose inside or something. But, I thought I would ask to see if anyone else has experienced this and/or if there is an easy fix. The sound card itself works fine because I receive stereo sound through the headphone jack - but only mono/right from the speakers. Thanks in advance...

Sorry to hear about that. Perhaps your battery really is dying and you need replacement for loger portable hours.

hi, i was thinking of upgrading my laptop and i remembered i used to visit this site before i bought it and how helpful the people here are.

well its a 505x model and it runs beautiful after over a year but i can feel the speed decrease when i use it after playing on my (P4 3.2GHz/1.5Gb/nvidia 6600gt/dvd burner/7200rpm HD/etc)desktop.

my question is, what upgrade will bring these 2 computers to a more even performance?

-ram from 512--->1.25Gb(around $120)
-HD from 4200rpm--->5400 or 7200(also around the $100 price)

I think you might need both. The 1.25GB of RAM seems to be about right; I havent heard of any dramatic speed increases by going higher. There are some, but not dramatic from 1.25 - 2GB.

I also think you should go ahead and get the 7200RPM drive. 7200 is just the best right now and if your looking for the maximum performance, just go Hitachi 7K60 60GB 7200RPM. If you want very very close performance and a whole lot more space, go 100GB 5400RPM. Last time I checked the 100GB 7200RPM drive was in perpetual development; I dont know if it has been released yet.

You could also do a processor swap and swap in a Dothan 2.0GHz. That takes a little bit of guts, and a little bit more know-how than the previous 2, and possibly $650, so well just scratch this one out for now.

All the other mods I can think of wont really help performance. Your M505 is capable of adding another hard drive, but to do it right that takes fabrication, another 7K60, possibly a new subwoofer, and IDK if the M505 can do RAID.

-Cool-

It really depends on what your primary usage is. Judging from the GPu in your desktop, I am assuming gaming. If that's the case, you will get more of a boost from the RAM. For general use (office apps, web browsing, etc), you will "feel" more of an improvement from the HDD. A 4200RPM drive makes a PC feel very very sluggish when doing most anything compared to a 7200.

ok i think i'll go with the hard drive first, then the ram after(mostly because i see ram prices fluctuate daily).

where is a good website/store to buy that Hitachi 7K60 60GB 7200RPM drive? i checked newegg.com but couldnt see it.(thats a first for me)

by the way, i do games on my desktop mostly but if a few upgrades really work i might move back to my laptop for when i have downtime at school.

Check zipzoomfly.com .. they were staying pretty competitive. Most of the time, they were the cheapest by a couple bucks.

Well i think my battery is dead... Does anyoneknow a way to recalaburate a M505x battery? My batter was charged 100% and left in my bag for several months and now it does not hold a charge at all.

Also does any know if the m505x can support 80g or 100gb hard drives?
Look on my previous post on this very same page for calibration.

M505 support 80G HD. Don't know for sure about 100G.
is there a tutorial on how to install a new hard drive in the 505x? i can see the rubber pad where i think it is but i'm not sure about which screws are for what?
You should try to consult your manual which should come install on your lappy.

It is very easy to do. The manual is in ~4mb pdf format.

As far as I know you need to remove only two screws. I am away from my M505 so this is all I can help for now.

Let me know if you still are not now comfortable. I should get a hold of my 505X in about couple hours.

Here is a quick link to HDD access. Not much help, but it shows where screws are.
