they truly are a jewel these M505X/XLs
I cannot fine a better quality notebook out there still.

Gateway marketing reps take note:
IF YOU WANT TO CORNER THE MARKET REINTRODUCE THE M505X/XL WITH
THAT SUPERIOR SOUND SYSTEM W/SUBWOLFER AND WITH THAT GREAT FRONT LOADING DVD/CD AND PUT AN X700 128 MEG VIDEO CARD IN IT. AND THAT SUPERIOR QUALITY 1280X800 ULTRA HIGH CONTRAST BRIGHT SCREEN AGAIN. THOSE 1.4/1.5 CPUS SHOULD BE VERY CHEAP NOW TOO IN QUANITY LOTS
SHIP WITH 1 GIG OF RAM AND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SELL THOSE PUPPYS
IN HUGE NUMBERS FOR 1000-1200 EASILY.
I WILL BUY 2 INFACT.

has anyone here installed an atheros wireless card in the m505x? I want to replace the b network card because it's kinda slow but not sure it would work. Thank you

I just bought a M505B2 from e-bay for $800 total with shipping

1.7 ghz
1 GB ram
40 GB HD

This of course is a wide screen, but why is everything streched? Do I not have the correct drivers? I do not see any settings to correct this problem. Please help!
Remember to change your resolution to the highest res (1280x800) and not some of the lower resolutions (1024x768) which stretch the image to make it fit.

-Cool-

Atheros card

Okay,

I have had a few problems, but I do use it EVERY single day.

The problem I have now is that the screen shuts off often, leaving a shadow of my screen. I contacted gateway and they are asking for $300 to fix it. They said it could be the inverter board or the backlights... Not cool. The screen does work fine sometimes, but most of the times, it goes black...

About the wifi card, I purchased an Atheros, and the guys at gateway told me the mini pci was soldered to the motherboard. Bullcrap. I found pics of disassembled m505 and it looks like the mini pci CAN be removed. It is located on the left side, under the keyboard. I'll work on that as soon as I get my screen repaired.

Do you guys think I should purchase a new inverter board, or could it come from somewhere else? I am asking because it does work sometimes, making me feel like it is not totally grilled...
Sounds Like it could be the LCD inverter board.... Check out ebay u can buy this part pretty cheap. Just type in Gateway M505. Regarding your wi fi its underneath your keyboard and it could be replaced very easily. Please Note if you purchse the b/g intel wi fi card u have to flash your bios for your OS to recongize that card. Also I might have my wi fi b card available somewhere in my closet. If you want it let me know.... I can sell it to you for like 20 shipped OBO.

Thaks for your reply

I have a question though, How am I supposed to flash the bios? I have been trying to do that a while ago, by downloading the archive from the gateway website but everytime I tried to burn it on a disk, it would not work at all. Maybe I am missing something here, but if you were able to flash it, pleaase let me know how you did it.

Thanks,

I'll keep in mind your offer about the wifi card

Matthieu

PS: are there any plans, guides, instructions on how to desassemble the m505?
I Honestly forgot how to flash the bios... IT was sorta pain in the butt and if you do it wrong u can mess up your system. Do a search on this forum for m505 bios upgrade or wireless b/g card. To save u trouble just replace your B card... PM me if need it thanks
post #935 of 950
ok. I found out that the bios archive available from the website CAN NOT be burnt using Nero... Kind of stupid in my opinion, since all gateway are shipped with Nero and no other burning software...
do not flash the bios... It turned the light all the way down on my screen and it now takes for ever to load my network interfaces...
Okay...

Well the Bios update was definitely NOT a good thing to do. My right arrow is also not responding.

Itook the laptop apart, searching for a switch or jumper on the motherboard to get back to the old BIOS... if anyone has a dump of the original version, please pass it to me, thanks

Also, while I was at it, I switched the minipci card and added the Atheros chip I bought. Well.. After setting up drivers in win xp, I was able to see my AP but no chance of getting connected... Don't really know waht to do anymore...

If any of you has an idea...

Thanks a lot for these links!!! I wish I would have read them before...

It is EXACTLY my problem, with the EXACT same wifi card...

I'll try to fix my bios problem using the battery trick.

After that, I'll see what can be done about the Atheros card... if anyone has an idea... thanks again for your help !
