Inspiron 8600 Battery(?) Issues

Hi all, gonna paste my post from the Dell community boards as well as a little update, anyone have ANY clue as to what's going on? Any help would be appreciated...

Quote:
Had my Inspiron 8600 for just under a year now, around a week ago the battery started acting wierd. I would fully charge the battery, unplug it, and after about 1.5 - 2 hours of use (as soon as I entered the 25-30% charge remaining region) the indicator would fall straight to ~8% and I'd be forced to plug it in to charge. Tried various things, removing battery for a while, charging it again etc, had the same problem each time I reached the ~30% mark.

Called support the next day, tried a few other things, updating BIOS, verifying BIOS indicator matched OS figures, nothing came up so I had a new batttery sent out.

Battery arrived here yesterday, plugged it in, charged it, exact same thing happened. Anyone have any clue as to what's wrong? One thing I did notice, while charging the replacement battery for the first time, the charge seemed to get 'stuck' on 78%, whether this is a charger/motherboard issue or just to do with the fact the battery was new, I'm not sure.
Here's an update from the above post... called Dell up again yesterday, told them about the second battery having the exact same problem as the first, support tech couldn't really give any more help (apart from e-mailing me some generic list of sites on laptop batteries), and told me I'd be called by one of his supervisors. Got a call a few hours later, gave him a rundown of the problem, and he told me the only thing left would be to try a complete cycle of the battery, decharge it completely, fully charge it and then see how long it lasts... Did that last night, left it to charge overnight, fired it up this morning, and got 80 mins of running.

Here's what's killing me: There's DEFINITELY something wrong here, but what? All the Dell Tech's i've talked to INSIST it's a battery issue (that's if they admit there's an issue at all, i've had some of them trying to convince me that the 90-120 min run time is normal, yeah, so a 50% drop in running time (with NO change in apps run, brightness etc.) and this warping that occurs everytime i hit ~30% is 'normal'? Don't think so).

Anyone ever seen anything like this, and have some advice on what to do? I have around 10 days of my 1 year complete care left (think this machine was ordered on Aug. 30 last year).

Thanks

I would try putting in a music CD and running the coumpter until it shuts down and then recharge the battery. Change your critical alarm setting in power options for shut down at 0 percent.

Im having the same problem as well. Except Ive had my 8600 for over a year. I went through the same thing, I got a new battery sent out, and its still acting up. Let me know what works out for you.

Really interesting.

And I was already wondering how other folks got like almost 4 hours out of their i8600.
Mine runs for like 90 minutes and if I am lucky 100 but then the battery is dead and I have to recharge. This actually really sucks oh and btw I also have that drop at the end

Hi guys, a little update for everyone:

Friday: Got in touch with Dell again and agreed with one of the supervisors that he'd have me send my laptop back to Dell for 5 days and have them take a look at it. (Only other option was them having send another battery out, which seemed pointless since I'd already tried a new one which had the same problem). Told me he'd get in touch with me over the weekend and arrange for packing to be sent to me by Tuesday so I could send the machine back.

Sunday: Woken up at 8:45am by a call from Dell, except this time it was some lady I hadn't previously spoken to, telling me that they had arranged for another battery to be sent to me and it would arrive either Monday/Tuesday.

Well Tuesday came, battery arrived, stuck it in, and SUCCESS. Done 3 full charges/run downs and managed ~3 hours each time (and this is with WiFi, music, constant browsing, the works etc.).

Am I happy? Yes. Am I reassured by our friends at Dell? Not really. I have NO idea why 2 batteries had the exact same problem, while a third seems to be ok (and from the sound of it, neither to the guys at Dell). Could it be different builds/models of the batteries? Guess I was lucky im still under warranty until September 9th, have a look at this reply I received at another board Seems like this problem could occur again, and I guess if your not under warranty anymore than buying a battery off ebay would be much cheaper than getting one from Dell.

Hope this information is of some use to those of you still having this problem.

Have you tried to undervolt? It could help w/ battery life.

Hmm Could you keep us updated on that? My new battery worked for a week or two before it started going back to the same problems as the original.

Hi guys

Just a thought. My father has an Inspiron 8600 too. So today I exchanged the batteries and guess what happens. My own battery runs around 90 minutes 100 when I am lucky. That battery ran almost 2 and a half hours and that with my res display at full brightness and wireless running.

And that got me thinking. My i8600 is my main computer so it runs almost all the time with plugged in power supply. My fathers gets charged and then run down and recharged.

So my guess would be that running the the laptop as a desktop as I do and I am pretty sure you other do too is VERY bad for the battery life. The battery in my fathers i8600 is even older then mine and still runs much longer.

Well I keep his now as DELL refused to exchange it and will run it down more often. Besides what is said it seems it is good for the battery to get fully discharged

Well just my 2ct

My primary battery dies at about 22-24% normally, going straight to 10%. My modular lasts the whole way.

I get about 6hrs from the combo of the two with WiFi.

6 hours you get, thats a lot.
On what settings are you getting this and more importantly doing what? Are watching something or just browsing the web and on what brightness level are you there?

Thanks for the info

Thats with brightness on med-full the whole time, with several firefox tabs (normally 10+) open, MSN, maybe Word 2003.

Yeah, I have run my i8600 hard for over a year now, and its still great. And now I have a modular battery, it is unstoppable!!!

I have my 8600 for almost a year now and I'm able to hit over 7 Hours on a primary battery..
7hrs, I find that hard to believe. What settings is that? Minimum processor, no usage, wifi off and screen on minimum?
everything low except for wireless.. i have that running but only at 20%/40% and just surfing the net

I've only hit over 7 hours once or twice on my entire 8600's life... after that I haven't been able to cause I keep using it or i just don't have enough time to test the battery life.. lol
post #17 of 19
I get about 6-7hrs using modular battery with screen on full, fair load, constant use and WiFi on.

wanna gimme your modular battery so i can test it out

Nope, I need it for school.
