Hey there! I'm gonna buy a notebook soon(MSI-1029) I was wondering if I should get the window 64-bit pro or the 32-bit? Do I really need the 64-bit? is it worth it?

I heard some many many many many bad reviews on 64-bit that kind of scared me abit... but I was buying the notebook for the 64-bit, I'm thinking about going back to Pentium M and ditching the turion lol....

All your Advice, commets, and feedback are greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advanced

Hello.

Im running windows 64 bit and it runs great and smooth. Im 100% sure that you will have problems finding drivers that work with your system. It took me about 2 and a half days to get my laptop all straightened out and running good. If you're good with finding drivers then i recommend windows 64 but if you don't want to waste your time theres still 32bit. hope this helps.

unless you know of a whole host of 64bit apps you're just dying to use, win32, there are still known compatiblity bugs in win64, and there are review all of the net that say the performance difference is small or non/existant, depending on what you run. I ran win64 on my emachines, and i noticed no difference (well there were a few bugs, but it is windows) so it really doesn't matter.

You shouldnt have any problems finding drivers because the MSI 1029 can be configured with the 64-bit OS (it is "64-bit ready"), so it will be fine.

If you're uncomfortable with the 64-bit edition (there really aren't many performance gains with XP), you might as well wait for Vista; you're probably going to upgrade anyways, so why not just wait and go with Windows Vista 64-bit?

Another question can Windows Home or pro install to Windows Vista? Like basically when your upgrading from windows 2k you insert the window xp cd and it will update it to XP. Is it still gonna be the simple , if it is I'll get the laptop w/ xp and wait for vista then spend alittle dough.

It'll probably work on the final release, but the beta is anybody's guess. And yes, it should be a simple upgrade procedure.

The 64 bit drives are on msi's website so finding them shouldn't be a problem at all. As to performance differences I have no idea, but i'm contemplating the same question for my system.

Most benchmarks agree, there is only a slight performance gain with 64-bit Windows XP over the 32-bit version. However, this will most likely change with Vista and in the next few years, as more and more programs begin to take advantage of the 64-bit environment. So far, only a few programs actually take advantage of it...

I would go with the 64bit because if you already have the drivers ready it is the same as regular XP with the option of running 64bit apps which you couldn't do with regular XPpro.

No it won't. And the final release will not support this either. The kernel and basic operating system are completely different from XP Home (don't waste your time with it) and XP Pro. 2000 Pro was close enough that you could upgrade it to XP Pro but it wasn't always a flawless upgrade.
Back your data up, get all of your install cd's together and prepare for an operating system re-install. Trust me, of the times that I've installed Vista, it's very very easy. I think you answer 2 questions, cd key and if the pc's on a domain, then you're done.

If you're asking whether or not you can upgrade FROM Windows XP to Windows Vista, then yes, you can. As is the case when upgrading anything, things can go wrong--yes, even in Linux, a kernel upgrade can end up being a little less simple than it seems.

does it matter if it was Window XP-pro64? or Window XP-home?!??! I got home edition at home and i don't wanna spend another 150$ on a cd that i can't use later on lol.
But if you can't upgrade at all then I'll just back up my data and reinstall Vista.

Whats the best way to back up your data? I mean like I'm probably gonna have a few adobe patterns, brushes, and lots of Dreamweaver stuff and probably personal settings as well, and also same perferance. I might but asking too much but what's the best way? what way would you guys do it?

Normally I just put anything on my 20GB video player... if i need more space I'll transfer to my pc..
